Who knows about oven heating elements?

Have a look on RS - for not much more you can get a small cartridge heater or a flat silicone mat one - they are not hugely expensive. For a rod oven I would imagine you wouldn’t really want a “big” heat source - a small element providing even heat would be much more preferable. In a small space you might find your big heat source will be cycling on/off too rapidly.

I’d couple it with a cheap pid controller and ssr/thermocouple from eBay (just over a tenner for all those) and you’ll get perfect control.

Yeah perfect - and I’d stick one of these to control it - you’ll get near perfect temp control, with little or no overshoot.

The yard I used to help out just used to use a 60 watt light bulb in the box to keep rods dry. It was left on all the time and lasted for years.

Years ago I had a rod oven, but it was to dam big so it went to scrap. Later on i bought 3 elements 240 Volt at 1000 watts each from a company called TPFay they can be bent to shape around formers. I eventually used one and a PID controller to build a simple oven for powder coating using a 100 litre metal drum.

Have a look at their shop the prices are not that bad, you just have to decide on how to mount them. But you could just be best getting a fan oven element and fan motor

I think the fans in the ovens would stop a localised hot spot in the element. it would be a case of keeping the fan running and switching the element with the PID. Build something big enough and you could do more than just rods?

you could go for tumble dryer or washer/dryer drying elements. just need an old tumble dryer

Also note your heat gun is unlikely to work properly on the element as it is shiny mental and so will have a lower emissivity (the infra red devices / thermal cameras assume 95%) you would need to put something on the metal to be able to get a correct reading such as some tape or paint.

Its an easy mistake with oven parts, When my mate became single he put bold washing liquid in a tumble dryer with some dirty clothing...his main mistake was telling all of us, we managed to fix it but it made a nice mess

I have a fermenting cabinet...it's heated with a 60w bulb...

I was looking at them before for a homemade powder coating oven.

will heat up to their labeled temperature and then not get any hotter (give or take a bit)

saves the bother with a temp controller... tho you could add one as a safety measure?

if the box is well insulated fit the 80'C and keep the roads at that temperature? - I'm assuming this is more than hot enough?

a quick google, which I should have done before posting says low hydrogen rods need to be kept around 120 to 150'C (different sources giving different answers, some saying 120'C is the minimum... and an hour at 300'C to recover wet rods!)

I made a heater replacement for my caravan fridge using a cartridge heater, aluminium block with a pocket cut into it and little thermostat, that was attempt no 2 the first attempt used the original mount on the back of the fridge and no thermostat but I wasn't keen on the red glow from the heater with that setup!

I'm a bit late to the party, but the heated cables used in vivariums would be perfect for this application. When green-keeping, I used to use them in the bottom of a cupboard holding [expensive] chemicals which had to be kept frost free - worked a treat.

Wrap them round your rods [stop sniggering at the back ] and the jobs a good 'un.
