I had originally thought of the slots in the arms but reckoned it would weaken them to much, also if I remember they would be too long for the height I have, will revisit it though and see.
It will get complicated if the arms can't be long enough to let the cylinder slide all the way in. You could compromise by moving the pivot away from the CoM, but that will make lifting the cylinder more work.
Depending on the height, the slot (and arm) could also extend past the pivot point, but only by the height of the pivot from the floor, so it doesn't help much.
The next option is for the slot to be open at the pivot point end, so the cylinder can continue to travel forward, but that makes the arm design more complicated.
