I had originally thought of the slots in the arms but reckoned it would weaken them to much, also if I remember they would be too long for the height I have, will revisit it though and see.

It will get complicated if the arms can't be long enough to let the cylinder slide all the way in. You could compromise by moving the pivot away from the CoM, but that will make lifting the cylinder more work.

Depending on the height, the slot (and arm) could also extend past the pivot point, but only by the height of the pivot from the floor, so it doesn't help much.

The next option is for the slot to be open at the pivot point end, so the cylinder can continue to travel forward, but that makes the arm design more complicated.

My original Idea had the boss welded to the sides of the cylinder holder and open slotted arms but I think it would be a pain to get them hooked in when bringing it back out.

I think extending the slots like I did a few posts back will get it at or past the pivot point and make things easier.

I don't think you're going to enjoy lifting the cylinder and getting the arms to rotate at the same time.

There will be alu angle extending from the bracket forward for the roller to slide along.

Lifting the cylinder when only having to do it from one end shouldn't be a problem for me, it is when I am trying to grab both ends with out stretched arms that it becomes heavy and awkward.

Maybe a slider idea mentioned earlier without hinge arm might work, will investigate that.

Looks like that's only providing guidance, no mechanical advantage.

Guidance is the main benefit, along with only having to lift at one end whilst the rest is held securely.

Seriously, try tipping it into the boot, then pick up, the bottom end and slide... that's all your mechanism is doing

You might need something to prevent it rolling or sliding as you lift, but that's easy... put the welder there as a stop

A strap and handle on the bottom makes getting a grip easier and the mechanics of the lift are then the same

As I have said it is not easy doing it that way due to the conditions of the ground. When I pick it up the road has a good slope on it and it is sideways so you struggle to keep things from rolling away. At the Harbour the cassies are very slippery and tilting the cylinder will make the bottom kick out easily.

I want a way that is holding the cylinder securely whilst I am tilting/lifting/sliding and my designs does all that. It may be overly complicated though so I am revisiting a ramp idea but it has to be able to stand upright to load the cylinder then have a controlled method of tilting before a guided method of sliding.

Regarding using the welder as a guide, are you mad!!!!!!! (jk) it is a new £7K welder and I intend to look after it

That hoist linked to earlier looks much more compact than I thought and may be worth looking at if one can be picked up cheap enough, it could also lift the welder in as well

My problem is controlling the cylinder as I tilt it over to rest in a holder, once the cylinder gets tilted too much the bottom can easily kick out, I know that from experience

Talking of controlling the cylinder....call me an old worry guts, but if it were me I would seriously think about installing a bulkhead behind the seats with that lot in the back, or buying a van/pickup that already has one.

I only drive around the harbour when welding away from the workshop so not too much risk unless I reverse over the edge

Take the arms out, that will prevent the cylinder talking over as the cog shifts.

Try a longer design that you can lay the cylinder in at an angle, simple pivot/slide near top and slide in ... bottom of the holder can sit flat on road, does not need to be at 90 degree to the holder...

Trying to envisage completely what you are meaning but the angled base/back is a good idea although it can't be too big as I don't have much room, storage box is just behind the rear passenger seat.


Maybe a flip out roller plate with sides for guiding as I tilt and slide would work. Once the cylinder/holder is in then it can fold back in and be used to secure it from sliding.

Basically take the arms off and attached holder direct to bracket

The bottom lip only needs to be small, not full size 40- 50mm or so should be plenty, and being angled means it's flat on the road when you load but will still provide sufficient restraint when lifting
