Managed to catch the outside contractors responsible for supply and maintenance of the school's equipment and, although they should scrap it or take it away, they'll happily leave this for me to sell - money I can plough back into teaching metalwork.

I have become a power hacksaw convert. Used a cold cut circular saw at my previous employers, they had a Rapidor but never had it plugged in. I bought a used Warco bandsaw when I started business on my own, but got fed up of blade wander and constantly buying new blades, so got a cheaply made power hacksaw in a local Machinery auction for £40. I always thought of hacksaws as yesterdays technology, but honestly it is better than either the circular, or bandsaw. You had to stand and work the circular, with both the bandsaw and hacksaw you let it do it's thing while you do something else. It cuts much straighter than the bandsaw, and has only used one blade in 2 years of use.

Can't beat a proper cold saw for the small stuff (including angle cuts) and the power hack saw for the larger stuff.

I love my power hack saw for cutting large diameter bar.

And you didn't rescue it, your even worse than your boss, old machines should be looked after, fettled, loved and used, by someone...

Breaks my heart the stuff that's been scrapped,loads of big old morse taper drill bits.,large ratchet pulling chains ,Oxford type welders, welding bottle trolleys , racking,storage cabinet block and tackles.
An overhead girder type crane with an A frame on wheels each end.

should have posted on here you would have had a line of people queing up and tip you a few quid for mechines at scrap prices even double scrap and still give a tip

At the academy (School) where i work the "sevice" provider's company policy is to scrap everything under their control. No exceptions. When the old school closed the D&T dept staff were given just two days to move what they wanted across.
The result of this was two Harrison 140's, three Colchester Bantams & four Boxfords plus half a dozen Meddings drills, Graduate wood lathes, saws, & 90% of all the contents of a typical well kitted out workshop of the time were all literally ripped from the floor by diggers & crunched straight into scrap skips.
What was provided in its place was cheap chinese junk unfit for purpose.
This is the reality of our modern system.
