You didn't go straight in with 17 mm did you?

Not quite sure what you mean? There was the 6 or 8mm hole down to the broken shank. The 17mm drill has no pilot bit, so yes, straight into untouched rock. I centred by sight as best I could, over the existing hole.

If the stone is loose it need sorting before hand because it's not even going to be strong enough to take the load asked

Just been drilling some ceramic tiles with some cheap as chips diamond hole saws. Cheap as in 16 pieces for £7.50. You get:

6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm,16mm, 18mm, 20mm, 22mm, 25mm, 28mm, 30mm, 35mm, 40mm, 45mm, 50mm

Thought they'd be rubbish but holes are as clean as a whistle.

No pilot on them so I made a jig:

Top up the hole with water:

Clean as:

Not really any breakout even:

I'm wondering, if, with plenty of water running these ones I got would drill 50mm paving blocks? Mate wants to inset "Knightrider" lights in his drive that zip back and forth as his leccy sliding gate opens! Still waiting for my lad to design a PICAXE controller to drive the superbright LEDS!

I found when buying these "cheap" diamond hole saws there seems to be different types. I first bought a couple separate, a 40mm and a 65mm.

Shown here the expensive 40mm one on the left and the cheaper 40mm one from the set. The set one is about half the weight and has a plain round shank rather than the 3 sided one.

Spark eroder or Metal Disintegration Machine.

Am i missing a trick? How would you spark erode a metallic object that is stuck in a non conducting mineral/material?

Thanks for your link. I've added those to my eBay 'Watch' list rather than the OP's one, since his supplier "Won't post to the Scottish Highlands" .

I have a set of smaller ones with pilot drill for using in mild steel which I've used successfully, but they don't go that big in diameter. Since most of my work isn't 'mission critical' and is often designed 'on the fly' the lack of a pilot hole wouldn't matter - I already have a 'Baldrick' plane to get round that .

I might just order a set later anyway, for all they cost it'd be no great loss if I had to pass them on to a mate for wood, plastic etc as they're supposed to be for.

Loose stone is the total no go for fitting. Failed mortar with an overly strong pointing is the only thing worse than actual loose.
To fix to it as is you take on the liability without being responsible for the actual fault
Want a big fat disclaimer in writing (not that is much use outside civil claims ). Or my Mason paying to rectify before hand.

you are assuming that the slate is going to attached to something via the hole.

given @Jonathan Webb's avatar, and the fact he said "submitted", I'd guessed this was some sort of art project, and the holes were maybe to pass cable or hose pipe through.
