Work Breaks

I get 30 mins break, but we can go and make drinks whenever we want - I am actually regularly encouraged to have more breaks (something about it being my round?) and people get annoyed when I carry on working.

all I got was when I was 15 left school on the Friday went in to the electrical shop on sat morning asked if any jobs going and gaffer said you start on Monday 3 quid a week worked for him 25 years and told him to stick it and worked for myself for the last 23 years

We get 30 at 10, paid, and 30 at 1, unpaid.
One of us usually ends up unloading a truck during one of them.
If working through the paid break, usually book overtime (at lunchtime on the time sheet)


Personally, I'd sooner have a drink and sandwich on the go, and go home earlier.

This week ive been lucky to have time to pour coffee down my neck. 10hrs solid yesterday and 12 today.

I worked briefly for a well know telecoms co servicing the trucks,first day went like this, turn up at 8, introduced to the man i would be working with, go upstairs at 8 into the canteen where newspapers were read and a fryup was made, rattle a few spanners then tea break, then an hour for dinner, rattle spanners some more till afternoon teabreak, truck is done by then so drive it round the yard and sit and watch the clock till home time, i left shortly afterwards.

The rule used to be 15 minutes break in any 4 hour period which was convenient to make the 15 minutes at the end of the first 4 hours and at the beginning of the second 4 hours giving you the 30 minute break in the middle of an 8 hour shift. Not worked for a while (retired) and don't keep up with the rules now but the 30 minute break was legit. We used to take individual breaks for a brew so the machine was not stood for any time but that can shoot you in the foot if the management sees the machine running with a man less and thinks you don't need him so we'll use him somewhere else.

My son often comes home with his sandwiches still in his piece box. Atleast once a week. 10 hour day, does get time for drink as and when needed.

I am reading all these posts and appalled at how company's treat there staff....I am 57 and worked for myself all my life since the age of 18 and for my father 3 years before that so i don't have a clue. The lads i employ are told to catch there breath whenever they like during the day and are given 20 mins at 10am...30 mins at 12.30pm and 15 mins at 3pm but as i say i tell them to take a breather whenever as they really graft all day...Having said that so do i right with them

I’m feeling very lucky with my breaks after this thread. Paid 2 hours. I work 745- 1700 1 hour at 10 and 1 at 1300 I’m paye with benefits

Always worked like that.
Once a roof is borded take 5 or kitchen units in place have a brew. Hate stopping mid job.

My guys have no set breaks, if they need a rest and slurp or an extended break they can take it. All I ask is they get done what is set out for them, fatigue is counter productive and dangerous.

Well, when out on site[sub contracting] you[we] take breakes as long as you feel like & often get "flyers" especially on fridays but the work gets done.

Regardless of anything else, I have to give it to my ex, a mid-wife. You think 30min break in 8 hrs is crap - try a 12 hr shift (and more sometimes) with no enough time to even go to the loo due to a lady being in labour and needing her, never mind actually eating or getting a slurp of a drink.

No enough staff to cover breaks, all of 'em flat out.
