Very old but still in use

Anyone still using vintage tools and machinery?

Was looking at some of the gear I use and it suddenly dawned on me that its a lot older than I am , The Laycock 65 ton press serial number 689 is 1940`s as are the two old oil dispensers. The oilers were at another yard as was the press and still in regular use, will relocate the press and carry on using it.

Beast of a thing for pressing in bushes and bearings , before I built my hydraulic press I also used this thing to fold 1/2" steel in a v block.








Has a small winch for raising/lowering the bed

Hi Bob,
Saw that huge press when I took a prowl round your "old" workshop; really impressive, makes my modern 30 ton press look like a toy.

Here's a pic of my middle size lathe, sandwiched between a 60's Smart & Brown and a 17" DSG. It's a "war finish" Colchester Triumph from 1943, still pretty accurate too.

my first compressor came from an auction that was liquidating long bridge rover.
i did some research on it and it was used out on an air field to blow up aeroplane tyres yonks ago and towed behind a tug so probably when rover were bulding planes or something?
it had twin welded tanks that made the chassis with 2 wheels either side and an aframe at the front which allowed it to be towed.
the motor was a very very old 1/2 horse power thing and was belt driving a cast iron pump.
the only thing that didnt work was the pressure relief valve that was blowing all the time so it wouldnt build pressure.
i fixed the valve but got a bit carried away with pressure as i dont think it was designed to go much higher than 80-90psi and i had it up around 120 which eventually stalled and burned out the motor.
it was in operation for quite a while but when the motor went i scrapped it as no one was interested in it.
but it was a lovely piece of machinery and very well made.

I just got my hand onto another Oil pump dispenser.

I now have 2, both are from 1940 and were sent to Briton as part of the lease Loan from America.
I know of a garage what was an American small vehicle small repair depot. Up to the Mid 1980's was still using most of the machines.
When the owner retired he took all the machines and I understand they are still at his house.

My Holbrook lathe's about 1955, so a touch older than me, the Test 2U mill has 1961 date codes on several of its motors, so a little younger than me - and the Oxford 110B was left to me by an uncle, so probably 40s?

Laycocks' is now a Tescos.

I have a leg vice, Progress pillar drill (1950s), 2 x Drummond round bed lathes (Edwardian), arbor press (Ex Binns Rd - 1950s?), rotary leather cutter (pre WW2?), Wolf Gut Buster, flexible drive grinder (1950s?), Hand operated bench grinder plus a few hand tools that belonged to my father.

I bought the the Black and Decker valve refacer 40 years ago and it was well used by then. The cutting cylinder grinder was bought re-conditioned at around the same time having already had one life.
Both had hard use in my business for 30+ years but are now enjoying an easier time in retirement!

My mill is 50's or 60's - not that I have used it much.

Tooling is more expensive than the mill.

I was given a press just like that. But as I was on a motorbike I couldn't take it away, not that I had room for it.
Under most of the machines the old bloke had were big old DC motors, at one time they got electricity from a local
power station, it was in Hampton Court, and they generated DC!

Mine is a Model "A" Mk 2 from 1963. It has all the toys except the taper turning attachment -thankfully the DSG does have one. I Bought the S & B from an MOD auction 42 years ago, it still had the scraper marks on the bed back then; Not so much now. I fitted the Heidenhain DRO when I started to suffer from old gits' eyesight a while ago.

Yes it was a 9" Ford from a mate's car, it was doing a wheel bearing every couple of hundred miles as the narrowed axle wasn't quite straight. Hence the re-machining of the bearing seating and backplate mounting face.

Rapidor saw from who knows when.

Those Rapidor saws seem to last forever if given a drop of oil on the sliders and crank once in a while. I have a Bandsaw and chopsaw as well, but put a big chunk of billet in the Manchester saw and go and make a cuppa; come back, and job done.
