I'd just LOVE a big fat bacon sarnie now

Just had one with mushrooms, it was lovely.

I have come up with a theory, apparently 90% of Chinese people are lactose intolerant (ever heard of Chinese cheese ?) and can't drink milk or eat cheese so they are using it in their steel production.

Can't eat it now sadly, as the nitrites (nitrates?) give me a migraine. Something in my saliva breaks it down and allows it to be absorbed rather than passing harmlessly through me. Evidently there is bacon available that uses a different curing process but I've not tried it.

There's a proven link with migraine. And sodium nitrite is viewed as 'probably carcinogenic' by many authoritative bodies.

However, it is possible, and fairly easy here and in Spain at least, to find cured ham (very like bacon) made using a traditional and chemical free process. Many people still make their own. Makes a stonking bacon sarnie!

Sometimes it sucks getting older, there is a whole bunch of food I love that I've grown intolerant to and sadly now have to avoid or suffer afterwards.

Because the EU stds are dictated by a goodly amount of corruption and import restriction foe economic reasons ?

Just to tie two of the drifts together and add another A bunch of the 'sail & oar' mob were having a run up the local river to Cognac from the sea. They overnighted locally, so we went over early with a gas plancha grill and cooked breakfast. Bacon sarnies, bit of a novelty for the french, but we got in some decent bacon and nice rolls. Talk about eager customers, cleaned us out pretty fast and sang a sea shanty as appreciation...

Back to carp steel, back in the early 70s we used to get steel of Swedish origen. Once in a while, the bandsaw would shreak and lose all it's teeth. We put it down to armour plate in the mix...

Many years ago in the Ardennes I saw firewood advertised as 'Mitraille' (you'll have to imagine the accent on the e!).

The barman said this was common, it meant full of shrapnel and machine gun bullets. They had to warn people in case they tried to cut it.

I remember a news item about a family in the UK that had the fireplace blown to bits by a 20mm cannon shell that was in a bit of firewood.
Lotta stuff flying about back then, it had to end up somewhere.

The old man was watching an air raid in N Africa, along with others of the squadron. A spare 20mm round came down and knocked them all flat. He had bits of it in his knee for the rest of his life.
