Why is it that when looking for a little workshop to rent the first question people ask is "What's it for" and as soon as I tell them its for a little metalwork hobby business I get the same answer "No, sorry can't have any kind of industrial workings going on" now if I was going to be spinning wool or weaving or some "Craft'y" type hobby that would be alright, and I'm talking about units/workshops on an industrial estate here, I don't know what's wrong with people these days.

I tried putting a 'want' on the local freecycle site for a unit to work on my van but the mods knocked it back, said it was more about keeping stuff out of the landfill.
That's what I'm doing with my van I said but they weren't having it.

Bicycle repair shop. If the landlord ever pops over, make sure there's a bicycle in there...

I had the same issue a lot of years ago, a dozen purpose built units to help local start ups.

I said it was for making gates and railings and got a big NO, two years later there was a guy making gates and railings, I asked why and apparently it was because they could not find enough people to rent the units, I'll let you guess if I was pleased with that answer.

"Bicycle repair" covers a multitude of sins. Do you need a lathe? Derr. Yeah. Welder; of course. Bandsaw, sheet metalworking, flypress they all work with bicycles...

Agree with the comment about the "softly softly" approach, what is allowed etc. but ultimately either it is a suitable space for use as a workshop or it isn't.

I wouldn't mind if it was industrial fab work, I could understand that, but being retired I just want to do some light scroll work using the metal craft system and some weather vanes to order, and anything else lightweight that might come in so nothing major, what a lot have said they object to is grinding and hammering Bl**dy tree huggers

Knew someone that rented a large unit as a garage on a compound belonging to a large firm that also had a workshop on the site. Strict no smoking policy on site anywhere as it’s a fire risk. Using welders, grinders and gas axes however was just fine and dandy. Couldn’t work that out at all

Tell them you're a sculptor that works with metal ...and just leave a few bits of randomly welded angle iron lying around ...works for me ;o)

About double garage size, and sadly a long way from Ciren, I'm in Devon.
