What a ....... hole

I admit this is a bit strange even for me but I thought I would share some pictures I took of some public bogs I visited on the isle of Bute in Scotland.

They are Victorian situated near the port in Rothesay and have been very nicely restored.






I think the cistern was interesting as it was glass so you could see the water filling/ emptying.

What can I say, it was a very pleasant place to spend a penny or actuuall 40p for the entrance fee but well worth it to keep buildings like this in fine order.

Just to add, photographing public bogs is not a usual pastime for me!

Fortunately they were vacant at the time or I may have been incarcerated

The ones at Aberdeen's Union Street Gardens were a carbon copy of those, but I've idea if they are still the same since I've not been in them for years.

Found one more. These are the sinks, not plumbed in anymore but nice to see them on display.

There used to be some similar in Southend high street, the council filled them up with concrete some years back, so that they couldnt ever be put back into use.

I had forgotten about them, been a few times - worth a visit if you are at the ferry terminal. Commissioned in 1899.

Great pics and fantastic Victorian quality as always...reminds me of water drinking fountains at most prominent places like parks,street squares etc when i was a kid and they still worked

There were 3 drinking fountains like this in a local park, I think I took the pic in the 80's.

This all pales in comparison to the toilets I encountered in a certain museum in Amsterdam! A spectacular edifice designed seemingly for the delight of the traveling offshore worker or stag party enthusiast!

That is incredible. What a lovely jobbie....
So many councils closed down public toilets. When the disabled access act came in they found it a lot cheaper just to close the toilets altogether and make everyone suffer!

The bogs at the Princess Louise pub in Holborn are a similar age, not as grand as them though!

For some strange reason, this thread reminded me of Charles Hawtrey as Dan Dan the lavatory man in Carry on Screaming. The bogs he attended were similar from memory.
