galvanising pre-used chassis - is it sensible?

I was chatting to someone yesterday about this, and we couldnt really see how it works.

With regard to landrovers...

I mean, occasionally, when i have the pressure washer near my ongoing job, i blast the chassis holes some more, and always more crud comes out - and i really dont think its just the rust thats formed since last time!

How is galvanising ever really going to sort this, without chopping open all the rails before hand?

It doesn't. You've to sort the problems first.

And still have to wax the inside, as the galv on old chassis may miss bits.

Worth doing, though.

Had my 1934 cars chassis shot blasted & then spray galvanized. Admittedly not box section but a U section ladder type.

Did you drill specific access holes for reapplying wax? or was it a case of whilst repairing apply wax before welding up?

Definitely need to fix up the chassis properly first and also get it blasted to remove the paint and crud. The galvanisers may be able to deal with the paint inside the chassis as they surcharge when paint is present but that may just be the for the pollution in their tank. it isn't going to be a great coating inside though

there are enough holes in a land rover chassis for applying the wax if you want to after all the processes are complete. AFAIK they were only ever painted inside from the factory never waxed

I've always just bought brand new galv chassis for Land Rovers as all the supposedly decent ones I'd cut up were rusty on the inside despite looking sound externally. A new genuine chassis from Land Rover for a SIII LWB was paint stripped - and found to be rusty under the paint. If that is what they were like from new then what condition is the inside of a used item going to be like ?

me to, it is less work to fit a replacement chassis than repair the existing first and then deliver and collect from the galvanisers

the ones I have done, the old chassis always turned out to have had more bad areas than I originally thought before dismantling

I thought it was only a rivet counters thing? As in, “this is the same car it was when it left the factory” sort of idea. If you arent rivet counting I would buy a new galv everytime.

That's been my experience with every rust repair on every vehicle. What ever rust you see when you look at it is only a fraction of what you'll end up repairing when you do it.

Are you just talking about removing the gunk that's inside the chassis? I used a drain cleaning nozzle, it is attached to a pressure washer, and jet blasts the inside of the chassis.

2k from shielder if you phone up and speak to them....

Plus putting a 2 chassis under a 110 that’s every vaguely clean results in a 5k vehicle

Some places in the world determine the age of the vehicle by the age of the chassis, so saving a chassis is worth it.

I like welding up chassis, so I enjoyed the repair challenge, plus I was able to brace bits that aren't done as standard. Additional hitch braces, and chassis bush holders, which crack on series vehicles.

Plus, it cost a LOT less than a new chassis.

If I ever looked at a Land Rover for sale, of any type or year, if I saw chassis repairs then automatically it put me off. On the other hand a perfect (un repaired / welded) or new chassis would be an immediate bonus so that other aspects such as scruffy body or mechanical problems would be less important.

Same here, always buy 4x4`s on condition rather than year. I would sooner have a 30 year old landrover than a late one that has been launching boats in the sea. The mechanicals on these Landrovers are so simple, cheap and easy to repair vs digging about on the crusty underside of a rot box. I have had a fair few chassis`s galvanised and had no problems at all with any of them, an old series two I sold to a mate that had a galv chassis is still as good as the day it was fitted over twenty years ago. Big selling point as well.

Had a discussion with a guy at a show that was telling everyone they should’ve gotten ex mil landies instead of civvy ones as “ they’re limited to 50mph so no wear”
Yes they might be, but thats driven at 50 whether it’s road, mud, sand, boulders or 3 footnon the air

Sensible choice. Some bloody idiots are putting Cummins in them now............ paint arrived for mine on Tuesday though

Im thinking about something V8 with an automatic now tbh not sure what though.
