Old Tractors and Dozers

Today I went to the "Dubness" VW camper meet at Bogbain Farm, near Inverness. Not because I have any special interest in VW campers, but because my eldest son had a gig there.

While we were there my youngest son and I noticed a group of rather forlorn looking old tractors and dozers. We couldn't resist having a good old clamber about on them. Here are some photos of the kit we found.

My eldest boy is a good musician but I think the engineering and general tinkering gene has gone to the youngest.

a few year ago they stopped all tractors parking on the seafront then they wonder why hardly anyone goes there . they are allowed back on now but there isn't many they are nice to see

I'd actually love to buy one of those to restore. I don't have the room though. The Ruston Bucyrus in the top photo is my favourite. Mainly because it has a lot of interesting features.

For example, look at the piston rod seal on the hydraulic cylinder that operates the dozer blade. It looks like a packed gland like you'd see on a steam engine. And it has a lot of malleable iron BSP fittings and pipe in the hydraulic system. Very unusual by general standards.

So unless you owned it you didn't climb on it anyway

Still use some of these old relics, got a Nuffield winch tractor we use on a regular basis for tugging over trees , have seen this winch break an inch diameter steel rope, also still run an old Drott crawler for burning up huge fires . Drott has a pushing fan that acts like a thousand leaf blowers





That tree really didn't want to end up on the road or railway line



Or this 100` + pop full of wind did not want end up through the power cables.

If we get any kids staying on our farm we encourage them all the time..........
at the end of their holiday they get to drive and steer my Massey 399, really tall and weigh's 4ton...if one takes a shine to all thing mechanical he gets to drive the 3CX as well.......even the big kids (mum and Dad love it)
u just gotta get em while they are young.........

Parental training and the knowledge that a boot up the backside or a clip round the ear if caught were sufficient incentive......

Youngsters today miss out on so much. . Our natural curiosity never extended into wanton destruction, aka 'vandalism' though

Sounds great @frank horton , our two used to love Digger Land in Kent where they got to use some very big bits of equipment and be driven round the off road track in the cab of a 4x4 JCB.

I got fed up of telling people not to climb on my jeep and messing with it when I took it to shows, I don't mind if they ask first but so many seem to just think any open top vehicle is an invitation to crawl all over it. You come back to it with the lights left on and a flat battery.

Caught people sitting on my motorbike at shows as well, the one that really made me mad was someone had decided they fancied sitting on my motorbike and they knocked it off it's stand and left it lying on it's side with fuel leaking out
