Home Brew Penetrating/Releasing Fluid ?

Would someone please be able to advise me what mixtures are being used to make up home brew penetrating/releasing fluid? I seem to recall one popular mixture may have been a 50:50 mix of acetone and auto transmission fluid or some other concoction involving acetone, possibly diesel?

Acetone and ATF, but they don’t mix so you need to shake well before use.

Acetone will probably strip the paint too

But, I’ve found that it’s the best penetrating mix for my home DIY needs.

No more money wasted on shop bought stuff

If you can, heat it.

After dismantling a couple of very rusty 1950's tractors, heat expands and breaks rust seal in seconds. I've got fixings off i thought there was no chance would ever move again.
Penetrating fluid can be a bit hit and miss, and takes time to work. It does have it's uses however.

Diesel and hydraulic oil here, Usally tie a piece of string round an offending part and dunk it

You can use white spirit, turps etc. in place of acetone. The mix won't seperate then.

I just use plain Diesel fuel in a dropper/plastic squirty bottle........just cant rush it tho......

My old boss used this when he was stripping his vintage machinery and when he tried to clean up my chainsaw. Good on the machinery, not so good on a chainsaw. You couldn’t hold the chainsaw, it was very very slippy.

keep it in a jam jam apply with a small brush kept in the jar..

The old fitter i worked with said there is only one plus gas son
Oxygen plus Acetylene

I use plusgas which is pretty good but ive had similar results using brake fluid and acf50 in a pinch.

I suppose it will do eventually as the acetone evaporates, but I’ve nver left it that long

in real world time is money and many cant wait an hour when a job needs to be done for other jobs to be done more so in a garage

still using the 25l of diesel+petrol mix I got from my next door neighbor'' wife's car.

Neat acetone. I didn't believe it either but it's easy enough to try and it works. The other additives are there generally to make the respective spray/penetrant more user friendly and to leave an oily residue which in most cases, you dont really need.

The opposite way round. The solvent is to thin the lubricant so it can seep in, and to soften/dissolve any gunk. An oily residue is necessary, if you want minimal damage, and parts to disassemble as smoothly as possible.

I had always assumed that to be true but I am advocating neat acetone as a release agent for heavily rusted parts, not a general purpose easing oil.

Hardly worth the effort when you can get stuff like this for about £40 a tub , smells good too
