Smoke and CO alarms

I'm just competing the pre plastering work on my extension, the architect has specified a wired CO detector in the living room and 2 smoke detectors, one in the new utility room and the other in the existing hall. Rooting around the internet I'm struggling to find a decent wired system, there are a few wireless options available. Has anyone got any suggestions / recommendations? Is wireless building regulations compliant?

Building regs will require 240v with battery backup. We always use AICO
If linking them with 3core+earth is out then we use their RF bases, just need a 240v permanent feed then.

put the wired Aico ones in .wireless cost a fortune for the transmitter bases your looking at about 18 quid for the mains battery backup units and 30 quid for the co2 and some 3 core and earth cable to link them . a bit of 2 core and earth 1.0mm from the feed to 1st unit .wire to the local lighting circuit where they are fitted not separate back to the mains as used to be

Is that regs now or just a preference? I've wired my new ones in 3 core back to a separate mcb.

i did the same but into a dedicated mcbo

mcbo just for alarms or alarm and lights?
I try and put them on the same circuit as the lights as if the lights go out people will re set the trip but if its just on its own you could be without alarms until the next time you remember to test them.

just for the alarms, but if they are without power they chirp

I've wired my new ones in 3 core back to a separate mcb.[/QUOTE]the idea now behind wiring to a local circuit is if there is a fire and cables get burnt the alarms will go off if wiring damaged fed from somewhere else and they possibly wont . its not preference its regs the same as emergency lights are fed from local circuits . no point in a fire tripping the lights down a passage and the emergency lights wont come on because there fed from a different circuit not damaged . forgot to say the alarms can only be connected to a local circuit if it has a battery backup not just a mains alarm

So I'm being a bit slow here ( long day of digging holes mixing concrete etc ) do I now have to run the smokes from an mcb feeding a lighting circuit? I've got the 18th edition regs book in the van but I'm knackered!!!

I have just received the letter below so assume they must still /can be battery operated or a sparky would want more than £48 a pop to supply and install them.

policy, Landlords are responsible for ensuring that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are
appropriately installed and are in proper working order which also means they need to be 'in
date'. Following an audit it has become apparent
your carbon monoxide alarms have expired.
If you have taken action and already replaced the
required alarms
we would be grateful if you could
furnish us with the expiry dates so that we can update our compliance records accordingly.
Alternatively, we can arrange for our contractor to attend and replace the alarms. The cost would
£48.00 per carbon monoxide alarm
inclusive of VAT
. Please note the funds will need to be
transferred up front.
Please let me know if you would like me to arrange the replacement alarms
for you, our bank
details can be found below for the transfer of £48.00 per unit

Yeah I know the RCD regs but when you said the smokes had to be run from local circuits I thought it missed something!
At least I don't have to rewire the smoke alarms before I've even connected them!

its great not having to run them back to the board on a separate circuit .cheaper and quicker specially if there isn't a spare way in the board
