For me the only area of improvement would of been to remove those mitres by taking the welds right back. Design is lovely and would look even better if it looked like a single piece
Client took inspiration from that but check out the size of that one! The handle ain't for dwarfs
Can long fingers reach from under the guard plate to that thumb wheel from outside ?
Watched someone fit a gate once with uprights at 100 crs with a similar lock.
They looked pleased as punch with it until "someone" put their hole arm through and unlocked it from the outside
And they left it like that too.
In short, no you cannot regardless the shape of your hands. I don't leave anything unless the client specified otherwise of course. This job is a recommendation from another buisness I did a very different styled gate and signage for with a different type of lock. Now if I tried to pass off that sort of thing these recommendations would soon disappear .
Four, five years maybe it's taken for my supply of work to be constant and being able to say no to stuff I don't fancy doing..Not about to waste my reputation in a hurry now over something so trivial as redesign of a guard if it didn't work as intended it would be gone and a new one made, fitted etc.
Reputation is harder to gain than it is to loose for sure
What is Foo Doo by the way ?
An effect of galvanising 2 mm wall.. To refinish flat again removes the coating at the most vulnerable part. Considering the possibility of such a style in stainless polished and re grained though
Yeah like we can get that degree of just enough without removing the function of the Galv. Your genrally correct but the gas volume and slow dip speed has actually raised these up some I carefully went at one that wasn't going to be seen and then made the choice. Close up it actually adds something rather than it looking very "jelly mold " in construction.Once the weld is ground flat, its flat. The galv forms a thicker coating over the weld, but the steel below is still flat. It's safe to level the zinc over the weld back to the thickness of the surrounding coat and maintain protection, just be careful!

Never had one come back ugly. Very much like a perfect bead someone had expertly ground flat topped but not down flush.Classic case of each to there own there. I've been plagued by galv enhanced welds for over 20 years and can't stand the effect it creates, you spend all that time grinding them back just to see an uglier version of the weld you just did on return from the galvanisers. Often think it looks like chewing gum pressed into the joints. I invested in a Dynafile years ago with a wheel guide either side of the belt with adjustable depth stops, allows grinding back to flat without cutting too deep, or slight inclination to either side to allow feathering of the edges of the 'weld'. Doesn't matter what the thickness of the material is it always happens although tig welds often come back needing little fettling post galv, which is why I prefer tigging to migging for nice stuff that gets dipped.
As always, there's always a tool for the job, but if you like the effect it creates then mine is not to question why, but for me it pulls the eye too much away from the overall design.
It really was a nervous time while the galvanisers had it!

There ain't no blobs and there ain't nothing wrong with the weld either 45 degree joint across 100mm 2mm openView attachment 149494
erm ok mate. Tis but in the eye of the beholder...
Had quite a talk through with the quality manager and the shop supervisor on how etc. To be honest after doing one and both of us knowing each others issues another would be easierTo be fair to them , they have done a good job with the galvanising to keep it straight. Didn't realise they could do delicate

I don't like powder coat to be honest it would be only under protest. No hot zinc spraying near me.Do you ever use hot zinc spray with powder coat over the top ?
