A bowline will make a very short part of the line chafe on the magnet ring, so use a round turn and 2 half hitches.
( I put my magnet over yesterday and it came up with one of my empty beer cans, got a cheer from the locals )

Splice an eye and use a D shackle ...then you never have to untie it ...but if you wanna use it now a bowline..

stainless d shackle would be better IMO aldi sell them !

I went for the bowline knot, pretty straight forward after a couple of goes.

I’m impressed with the magnet. I used it off the raised decking in the garden, from handrail to floor it about 3.5 meters. It had no problem picking up a full mid sized fire extinguisher, 6mm plate about 350mm square, and some 90mm diameter steel about 300mm long

It’s seriously powerful, needed a pry bar and wedge to remove the magnet from the plate

Nope, sharp knife and cut off the rope. I can’t swim so there’s no way I’m getting in any water

Magnet is cheap enough for it to be disposable if required

The trouble with that plan is the best you'll manage is about 2ft below the surface (probably less) and that could still be a hazard for someone motoring along, why not just loop it through and then be able to remove the rope entirely if you get into trouble ?

I can do that, I’ve got 250m of 8mm nylon rope

Floating cheap nylon rope is the nighmare for boat owners waiting to happen. Some years ago i was out sailing down the coast with a lady friend.

For the boaty types, 33 ft boat, broad reach 15 knot westerly. Chugging along nicely until....

Some muppet had tied a lobster pot string end markers together with floating orange cheap 8mm rope.

Boat takes a violent nose dive as the keel caught the orange rope and we started dragging a string of pots, rope then slid off the fin keel and caught on the free wheeling prop, until one of the end markers was bouncing off the boat.

Oh flipp...and other words. Knife, jubilee clips and broom shank, trying to cut it off, all the time dragging a string of pots. A very stress full hour getting free, fortunatley when one end was cut, it snapped and off we went with out the pots.

^ My boss had to don mask & flippers and then dive under his boat with a knife to cut it free after snagging on nylon rope, he said it was stressful as he had to drop all the sails so the boats wallowing about making a couple of the crew feel seasick, plus your drifting where ever the tide is pushing you...

I used to work on a fishing boat and occasionally we would get "fanned up" and the skipper would just strip off to his underwear, tie a rope round himself for us to hang on to and he would jump in with a knife. Didn't matter if it was the middle of winter and blowing a gale. He would, after many dives down, get us freed and we hauled him back on board and we would continue fishing, bloody hero

Lots of suggestions, but no instructions, would u get by with a granny knot?

2 or 3 for safety sake
