Cheers Folks, now that I know what type of knot is required I can look up how to make a bowline knot, seems to be the favourite amongst you all

What I often do and its simple and effective, Just tie an ordinary single knot, then un-twist the rope strands a little and slip the short free end through the gap created,

I overheard someone recently telling that his scout master once told him; " If you cannot tie knots, tie lots"!

Bowline would be my choice as I had a better scout master

I’d go for a double figure 8, same as you would use for climbing, a bowline can run through if unloaded.

fold the rope in half and pass the fold end through the loop on the magnet and the other open ends of the rope back through the eye.
this way theres no knot to fail and youve doubled the rope up for max pulling power

Just beat me to it. Round turn and two half hitches. - It can be undone even under load, easier for a novice to tie, and will not come undone if loose (ie unloaded) and caught the wrong way.

I would pass half the rope through the eye and tie/tape the 2 ends together using anything.
Keep the 2 ends on the bank that way if the magnet gets really stuck on anything you can undo the knot and pull the rope out.
That way you only loose the magnet rather than the rope as well.

What sort of 8mm nylon rope? 3 strands, or sheathed?
If 3 strands, the simplest, most reliable is a splice. really easy to do, and looks better than a knot (Even a nicely tied Bowline or Figure of 8) with a lower profile, so less likely to get caught on stuff.

Disappointed no story about the rabbit and the tree

The rabbit comes out the hole goes around the the tree and back down the hole, I know the story but what's that got to do with tying knots ?

Yup, I use a bowline when going up a mast as it's an easy one to undo after it's had load on it but as Dan says you have to be careful when it's unloaded.

That is a really good idea, since nylon rope floats if you tie it on then when you get the magnet stuck you'd be leaving the rope as a hazard for others to get snagged on, at least with a plain loop you can remove the rope and only leave the magnet behind.

clove hitch ,with a decent length tail, wont slip, learnt my knots as a firefighter, and buoy have they come in handy.
