(a)isn’t a common dimensional factor when we talk about fillet welds generally any more. More often we refer to (z) now which is leg length. I actually like to use both because they represent different things when talking about the soundness of a fillet. You might have a 4mm throat but your last weld represents very clearly the leg length ain’t well matched to that throat. A good rule of thumb to work with is Z x 0.7.= a
If this adds up something close then your not far off a well matched dimensional fillet. So you’ve got a 4mm throat so your leg length wants to be around 6mm.
You’ve also got toe transition issues with that weld in the bottom pic which is another story.
