Propane Bottles

I use propane in the caravan. We carry one 6kg in the locker but I know its getting low so I took another away with us. I fastened the full one, upright, in the back of the car.
I left it in the car for a few hours during the current heatwave and when I opened the car door the car was full of gas....well it smelled like it was
Does Calor Red Propane bottles have some sort of pressure relief valve....Im assuming that the heat expanded the gas and it blew off.

It could have been a disaster and Im not sure of where I would stand with Insurance had the car blown up or caught fire

If I recall correctly, there's usually a little, circular plastic cover somewhere on the valve assembly? I've always taken that as being a relief valve/vent.

Ive googled Calor and couldnt find it so Ive just tried again and found Adams Gas.....yes there is a pressure relief valve in case it gets too hot......I should know really......maybe I did but I forgot

this is why when ever i am carrying gas for a job its always last thing in and first thing out! (not due to explosive risk but more with out the gas I cant do my job!)

There will be the relief valve but if that opened you would have an empty bottle

Some have a limited relief valve, they only release a tiny amount of gas, propane stinks (compared to ng and butane) so it doesn’t take much to smell

If you don't tell your car insurance you carry compressed gas or air - your not insured as a generalisation.
Some don't even allow it never mind an extra premium.

Gas bottles "should" really be carried in a locker with a hole in the bottom to drain any gas leakage out safely. Sail boats are designed like that, and caravan gas lockers

No way would I ever carry gas bottles in the car.
Can you not put them inside the caravan, maybe in the wardrobe? and carry your clothes in the car.

Your not carrying if its part of std equipment, what about an lpg car even? Well if you tell your insurer it's petrol, diesel or battery you have no cover likewise

I converted the ac to act as a compressor for on board air so it is kinda non standard

That also means there's no longer any gas in it, so moot to the point being made.

yes I know thats why I was asking, so many 4x4 owners now have these cheap 12v compressors and tanks in the back do they all tell the insurance companies?

Really you should carry something heavy in the rear of the caravan to balance it out to get the correct nose weight, gas bottles should only be carried in the correct locker that is usually on the A-frame of the caravan.

I occasionally carry gas bottles in the car but usually I stick them in the pickup back or in my trailer, either way I wouldn't leave one unattended inside a vehicle.

We all know insurance companies will try and get out of any liability in the event of a claim especially if they can turn around and say you weren't carrying a gas bottle in a type approved container/correctly stowed, blah blah blah...
