To run against what part of the grinder body?u still need a guide bar even with one of those so no point
Wih that its tight against a fixed point and depth is set. Will give a better finish and increased blade life.

to run the cutting disk against . I do it all the time it has nothing to do with blade life and the finish makes no odds its cutting through the steel its a guide along side of the disk. here if no one understands

ive done it often just by a pencil line for stuff about 4ft long never needed a straight edge other than pencil lining it
a few pointers let the grinder do its work when scribing it down the whole length and then gently start cutting into it steady all along its length
pack under the sheet when its delivered and allow once side to drop lower as you cut it
just be aware if you cut straight through it can grab the cutting disc

Cut the box with a grinder and slitting disc. Faced with your situation I should use the gas axe or a larger grinder. Yes you could with a little one it will hammer the tool and a few discs. I would not use a guide with the grinder but I should with a torch .

Well it appears I'm sorted for the plate cut to size now thanks to Revs1972. It's saving me a few quid which I am thinking will go towards and Evolution rage 2 chop saw for the box section. Seems to be tye tyst option for not to much outlay. Would love a bandsaw but to much money at this stage.
Failing that I could get a bigger grinder as will need one when I do the patio later this year.
