Steel Prices June 2018

I often see the question 'is this a good price' or 'what should I expect to pay for' etc.

I have just placed an order with Franklin Steel this morning so thought I would post it here for reference, it was a cash sale for 14 mixed lengths and I am not an account holder.

Prices are per length of 6.3 metres and 7.? metres for the box.

Box:
20 x 20 x 2 £8.50

Flat:
40 x 5 £10
40 x 3 £6
20 x 3 £3

Round:
6mm £1.33

All plus VAT
Delivery £15 (any quantity)

He said he worked hard to get those prices because I am a repeat customer (could be bullmanure) and steel prices were very volatile, changing by the day.

About there or thereabouts. Remember that quantity in the delivery matters. £15 just don't cover costs of delivery even if your two miles up the road.
I spend above £200 each delivery as a minimum and just collect myself when I am an odd length short

The prices surprised me actually, some identical and some a little cheaper than what I paid well over a year ago on my last order of similar profile.

Stockholders do deals on what they can sell lots of and often use other stockholders for what they ain't got .
After a while of regular buying mine has become very honest about it but if I went direct I would not offer economics of scale so genrally on one offs I pay more than I might for convenience.
100x30x2 ERW job on bench presently He did the finding and buying marked it up and sold it me with the rest of my delivery that week . Can't remember the last time I worked with ERW and his driver actually thought it was stainless

Gosh it must be dear around you. I do deal with bundles but nothing like the asking prices. Just a few fancy sections on the handrail side

Probably mate London/Essex is not the cheapest place and rare that Brundles do stuff much cheaper than ISG or Parker Steel unless ordering in quantity.

Does it really matter, customer gives the go ahead for the work to be done? I don’t add anything on unless I collect or had to do a load of processing.

It's because he's Northern, They're only interested if its free

So does my time, ringing around suppliers trying to haggle them down a few quid.

It may be different for your balustrade/ornamental work, but cement companies are not looking at a few hundred quid difference in materials cost when there is £5k of labour on the quote.

Its unlikely to be a few quid if your going of brundles list.
I have worked on the cement plants, simply bill the hours I have never supplied steel to them nearly everything including rods was supplied by them but will have to ask my mate who is the main contractor how he does it.. I recon it's x3 plus time sorting

At the end of the day steel is a commodity the price the price the fabricator pays is relivence to the price the stockholder has bought it in at one week heavier sections may be slightly cheaper than lighter and vice versa othough I don't use a huge amount but still tend to buy stock lengths because it is by far the cheapest way to buy it all comes in eventually I usually self collect from Carlisle

Daft way of doing business Imo. Whats the point in stitching someone when at best you steal a tenner? I like folks to come back again personally and recommend me.
Last few weeks I actually had a few want to pay me extra all but one I refused (special circumstances) but I did initially refuse .
Cost of acquiring new customers should always be considered, it's a lot cheaper to keep them
