I shot a Adams .45 when I was 14. Never forget the sights were fixed and stamped 70yds.

There were comparisons with Colts back then.. How 'I dropped a Dervish at ten paces with my Adams', while another guy with a Colt .36 emptied his gun at a frenzied tribesman, but still got his head split. Obviously cos the smaller caliber didn't pack the punch of the Adams.

Had a niggling feeling it wasnt an Adams. Quick search and it was an Anderson, istr colt pinched some of the Andersons features. Might have been the frame

Because I make leather holsters, I have several Denix replica guns I use for size purposes.

I confess, I have been known to go out into the back garden with a replica, pull the trigger, and shout “BANG!”.

Used to sort out probs for a German Shipping Co. The owner wanted some custom boots from an eccentric leather bloke in the mountains behind the Algarve. So I take them up there and we are behind a guy in the queue. He pulls out a .25 automatic and wants the leather bloke to make a holster. My Germans were bug eyed, looking at this. But we get to front of the queue and he has his feet measured and told to come back in 4 weeks.
I get to pick up the boots and send them off to Germany. Learned later they were too tight and given away to the yacht skipper. Hey Ho.

Thanks for the info, everyone. I might try some ali with wax on it since I can get that to a very high polish or groove it for reduced stick. After that, if it fails, I'll come back to the idea of plastic stuff. Thanks for the offers!

24 grains of powder in this pistol so I don't get my fingers blown off. That's about the volume of the first joint of your little finger (about 2cc?), although it is said that it can take up to 40 grains. The idea is to have a thin paper covering at the primer end so the primer can ignite the powder easily, hence the need for a flat bottom.

Unyone know where you can buy jumbo sized cigarette papers? Is there such a thing?

There are "king size" Rizlas, nearly 2" wide, if you need more than that you'd have to relive my youth and stick a couple or three together... Or the "head shops" sell ready-made cones at a bit of a premium?
The thinnest are the ones in the silver packets, I mic'ed some as I use them for touch-off on the mill, they're a little under half a thou" thick.

Most people just use plastic test tubes for their measured out loads but that is rather modern (and messy on a windy day) whereas in the 1850s they made these small paper parcels capped with the ball, rather like modern brass rounds. They would be supplied in wooden blocks drilled with 6 holes to hold 6 rounds and then wrapped in paper or card.

A silver rizla paper does burn well, and can be sealed/twisted into its own little powder ball. Do work well even with 12 bore powder unloaded into them, (insert into tennis ball with a fuse and match heads for optimum effect)

I would turn a cone in a piece of hardwood, then use a hard, gloss, polyurethane varnish.
I *think* it can be got in a range of slippiness- certainly printing varnish can be ordered with different "slip"

Somewhere on youtube is an interesting vid of a black powder gun which exploded. Owner had not been cleaning it properly, and one cap managed to ignite another chamber.

Fortunately for the health of the shootist, he had only loaded two chambers. Unfortunately for the 19th Century revolver, it didn’t make it.

The effect of smokeless gunpowder on these old guns is ‘interesting’ too.

Most 44s will take 40+ grains in the chamber but I go for 24 grains of Kranks Medium or 15 of Swiss Number 3. Hopefully I will retain my fingers. I only shoot it at 25 yards where I can get a group around 8 inches through the very primitive sighting system (wide groove and small 'pip'). The best method is to have oversized balls (snigger!) so that when pressed in, they seal well and leave a ring of lead sliced off. That way you are assured (99%) of a tight seal. I also add a smear of Lard or E45 over the lead to help seal it off. One of my cylinders is 3 thou diameter larger than the other so the .454 balls don't seal quite as tightly, yet better than .451 balls.

I've found somewhere that sells fag paper in 5m rolls so I'll have a go with that and cut circles for the base and cone shapes for the side. Will report back during the week.

That's for muzzle loading rifles rather than cap-n-ball revolvers due to rifles needing the ball shoved a longgggggg way down with a flimsy steel/brass rod.

Today I will have a look at making a cone in the lathe and turning it into a countersinky kinda thing.

I made some cones from fag paper folded up the end of a felt-tip pen and then glued up the long edges. The idea worked up until the point I fired the 6 shots off and the glowing embers of the fag paper were still dropping out of the exposed chambers. If I was pouring in new gunpowder onto glowing embers.....?
So, next thing is to see about nitrating some paper to make flash paper which should combust completely. One was a misfire so it was suggested that I glue a dab of gunpowder to the base of the paper cone to ensure it ignites. Good idea!.

Made some new ammo yesterday. One of the paper cones in the bottom right of the pic. I found about 15kg of airgun pellets at the local range with about another 15kg of paper, dust, flakes of rust, bird poop etc. that needed to be filtered out. Airgun pellets are almost pure soft lead so are ideal.
