Ball bearing seat

Afternoon guys.
I am in the process of designing a piece of tooling. Basically a solid shaft that is indexting. To lock the shaft in I will be using a ball bearing on a compression spring. How would I go about machining/drilling the dished seats for the bearing to sit in to. The seats are not deep about a quarter of the depth/size of the bearing. Picture below is a drawing of what I am trying to explain. It's not to scale.

I lost interest in the video after 2 mins. Too much drivel, not enough doing.

I would still start the hole with a center drill, the hard bit will be indexing to make the indexer

depends on the size of the ball and shaft...if it was like in the picture above I'd just drill a blind hole with the diameter a bit smaller than the ball diameter. as the ball goes up in size compared to the shaft diameter, then I'd be thinking about a ball nosed milling cutter

It will be good when it's done. Can't explain what it is I am making but will post pictures when it's done.

I would drill the detents with a centre drill, that way any dirt that gets in there will fall in the centre pip hole rather than holding the ball up off the seat.

Does it need a round bottom ? Just drill a hole smaller than the diameter of the bearing and the spring will locate it in there.

Was thinking the same, perhaps the holes could be cross drilled, that would keep them clear. Might also pay to experiment with a bit of stock and some springs, never underestimate the power of "sticktion"

Centre drills have always seemed logical to me. Normally leaves a nice smooth finish and a hole for dirt like Pete says.

Yes. A centre drill a good idea. It has an oiler for the bearing. Have finished the drawing of it.

Start with a larger round than needed, drill your pcd then chuck in in the lathe and turn to size, breaking through the holes

I think in your diagram the ball will locate too securely in the recess and your shafted not turn. The recess is too deep.

The recess will be shallow. The drawing is to scale but the bearing/seat isn't.

If the drawing is to scale, the ball is way too big to engage in such a small diameter shaft. The relative dimensions should be much closer to your first drawing.

Just pop the tip of a drill in to make the holes Spence'. All you're needing it to do is locate the ball, so nothing fancy is needed. A V shaped depression will also make it easier for the ball to step out of the depression when you're changing position.

Yes. I have made a scale version of it and it works good. Everything should be good as long as it's accurately drilled.
