Heres the york back together, i shud have waited for the paint to dry another day or so but i was to impatient , i fancy trying to clean an old carpenters vice , a 52 1/2 e if i see one cheap. But i goota get back to building my house coz missus will feel neglected otherwise.

Yep. over 70 kg if I recall correctly. Difficult to get a sense of scale, it wouldn't fit on a regular bench for example because it's almost a metre long.

Six inch flap disk to work out how to make up pipe jaws.

It went to a collector eventually.

This is a vice I bought new about 40 years ago. It's spent the last five bolted to a bench outside so I though it's time to clean it up and give it a coat of paint. There's no maker's name on it and the shop I bought it from said it was made in Czechoslovakia. The jaws are 4-3/4 inches wide.

New fasteners, including a homemade grub screw:-


This is the swivel clamp, the casting isn't quite right on the RHS so the bolt head isn't captured:-



So I made a tab washer:-

The screw holding the main nut was cut to length so it bottomed in the hole but put the spring washer under slight tension so the nut could centre itself:-


The finished job:-




It's nicely colour-coordinated with my Progress No2 bench drill too.

This little thing weighs 68lb, and has 5.25" jaws. It's quick release (something new to me as I've only ever had plain ones) and is unbreakable, just how I like them

A couple of action shots for those who occasionally wonder whether I actually use any of my vices.



Decided to finally sort the No.5 and get the rusted solid bolts out. They've resisted every attempt, and even the heads snapped off, they're so solidly rusted in. Working on the rear jaw now. Using the Bosch 12V drill.

Proper tool porn. Finally, all four bolts are out. Talk about putting up a struggle. That's one more off the 'tuit list, along with the little belt drive Union grinder, done this morning. That had the stub of a toolrest arm in one side. Had to drill & chisel that out.

Ok not a vice but an unusual sash cramp with cast aluminium ends plus 2 g clamps.

The 8" record clamp still has its sticker! Going to have to be a very gentle restoration to preserve this!

Does anyone know what year the original Parkinson woodwork vices were made from and till? The ones with the wording in the semi-circle, with no webbing on the front.

I am restoring one currently which would appear to have first been greased, then used heavily, then spent some time either outside or in a very damp environment. It has a relatively fresh crack which I think was from someone else’s previous attempt at restoring it (and giving up because the bolts were so seized). Not heat nor shock would aid me to turn them, and eventually I left it in oil for a few months - one turned, the other sheared. The cast is really quite strange, very Victorian looking and complex. @MattF look away now, this has been in the blaster! (But it really was terrible before)

I have a couple of small vices on articulated bases, so when I saw this item in an unrelated category on ebay I took a punt. The lable says " Hydra Clamp ". Its actuated by a screw which hydraulically pushes a piston up through the base to lock the ball mount in place. Its cast iron an well made. I drilled a couple of holes in a 2 1/2" C-clamp and attached it to the threaded stem. This should be a handy item for positioning small items to weld.

Late Victorian up until around the 20’s or 30’s, if I recall correctly. CW gauged the dates from the catalogues. There was a crossover period where both types were available.

This vice collecting has led me pick up another Record vice. I have a 112 that I've now taken to bits.

someone had overpainted it in a strange colour and not very well. I plan to give it a bit of an overhaul and possibly a coat of paint.

I have a question about the quick release lever, is there a technique to setting the spring tension when re-assembling this part back into the vice?

I see it has a special nut for maybe such a purpose.

I also notice that this vice is not cast with the letters 'Record Steel Heavy Duty' instead it is just 'Record Heavy Duty' does that mean that it is not the unbreakable steel version?

Likely ductile/sg iron. It’ll take you a lot of effort to break that
