i got a 1/3d hp one on mine and it cuts up to 3 inch solid bar no probs

I’ve got a 1 hp single phase on my Qualters & Smith. Quite happily ploughed its way through some 4x2 steel channel the other day.

I’ve got a 1 hp single phase on my Qualters & Smith. Quite happily ploughed its way through some 4x2 steel channel the other day.

in home workshop machines wont be running constantly day in day out so can run easily enough on smaller motors without overloading them my Harrison lathe has a 1 and a half hp motor fitted . with as lot of work it gets warm but not sufficient to cause damage

Not only working them constantly but exceeding the designed limits is a good way to warm the motor up, heavy cuts on the lathe and pushing down on the power hacksaw for a faster cut will do that!

Reminds me of being at school we used to like to slam things into the disc sander to feel the machine shake and cope with the sudden load and a shower of sparks to boot (silly thinking back but what do you expect of 13year olds!). It all ended when one lad got his fingers caught between the wheel and workpiece which had jammed between the table and the disc. After that it was very well supervised and we were all a bit scared of the same happening to use!

nowt wrong with taking bonus cuts now and then and giving the saw a good shove down with your hand and exercise your muscles at the same time

does anybody have any idea what size motor should be on a wicksteed power hacksaw

Mine is a Wicksteed Econicut 14". It had a 3 phase 1hp motor, have just changed it to single phase. Motor is now 1+1/2 hp 1420rpm.
1 hp single phase motor was not quite powerful enough.
