Boiler ran out of oil

Just to check, in terms of bleeding, we just loosen rather than remove the Allen head?

I’ll gave to guide the other half through this on the phone as I’m not there for ten days!

Also, the filter bowl. Where can I find I replacement filter and o ring? I removed it on Sunday and both have seen better days. The filters covered in a black gunge. I’ve looked on eBay but it’s hard to find an exact match.

Get someone experienced in to do it for her - unfair to put her in this situation

First thing is pull the plug that coonects the burner to the board. A shock off the contact tip area is serious!
Yeah, it's going to need bleeding proper. Start with the bleed screw at the filter but chances are you will need to remove the fuel line from the burner and bleed through well and fully at that point.

Be aware you can pick up crud from the tank bottom when this happens and then you need to blow the fuel back under inert gas pressure

As I said in my other post, get your OH to just undo the screws a turn on the filter top, then after a few minutes when oil comes out, do the same with the allen screw on the side of the pump (as in carbons link) and then it will go.

She's pretty capable

She’s pretty handy so I don’t think this will be an issue for her at all. She serviced her D2 at the weekend so I should think she can undo a couple of screws and and Allen key.

You only need to slacken the Allen screw but if you don’t hold the hex extension it’ll probably unwind.

Loosening will be fine - it stops the oil squirting as far when it does get it.

With regards to the filter -

There are so many different types, and the whole units are so cheap that just make 100% sure you have a valve upstream (i say this now, whilst the tank is empty!) and then just replace the whole unit - filter element and housing in one.

Theyre about a fiver or something.

Sure, theres no issue with a replaceable element - if you can find all the parts for a unit that was probably put years ago - but, if you cant, just make sure you have that upstream valve (some filters housings, irritatingly, have an integral valve - so you cant replace the housing whilst the tank is full) installed when the tank is empty.

Thats great. Thanks. Yes - looking around there are loads of types but as you say, the whole unit is cheap so i will just replace that. The filter in there seemed to be plastic mesh - does the replacement need to be the same or are paper elements or other options better or doesnt matter?
