Hi folks

Was in a workshop today and got a hobby welder gave to me, its a sip weldmate 140, i know its a small cheap welder but for nothing its dead on and it came with goggles and a big bag of rods!!

What i need to know now is how to weld, i have been wanting to buy a welder for a while and learn but have never got around to it, i would have bought a inverter if i had to buy one.....Anyway how do i weld any tips how to get started??

We don't have a tutorial yet for arc welding. Probably the best place to start is in the "Learning to Arc weld" section of the Arc Welding Forum Library.

What size are your rods and what markings do they have? 6013 would be good for general purpose on mild steel, and I'd guess the 140 amp welder could run with either 2.5 or 3.2mm rods running on anything up to 6mm sheet. Don't start on anything thinner than 3mm.

Ditch the goggles, they are not for arc welding.
You need a full face shield, basic ones can be got for £10

Dont have a clue what the rods are, i got reache a black bag of them, they looked like a mixture of thick and thin ones, thats all i can tell you. I will get a look again when i get back into the workshop...

On the end of each welding rod there is a four figured number, What is it?

What sort of power setting are you using?
What thickness of metal are you welding?

If you want a better understanding of arc welding i would recommend you go to the local tech, If you have time to spar i would recommend you go to Belfast (Mill field tech) On a Thursday night.

Head for Belfast.
Make your way to the city centre.
Then Make your way to the back off Castle Court
You should be going passed (black man Tech) on your left, follow the road to a set of traffic lights ("Cross roads" junction) go straight
you will see on your right the black taxi ranks, and the sign post for the Falls road on your left. Millfield tech will be in front and to the left. (but drive straight)
you will then see the sign post for Millfield tech carpark on your left. At the 2nd set of lights. If you pass every thing and end up looking at the Albert clock (you have gone to far).

And tell the welding lecture the 3Rs has spoken.....

thanks 3rs dont need directions, know exactly where that is, work in belfast alot just hadn't heard it refered to as mill field before
