Table renovation.

Any ideas for restoring the finish on this table?
I think it's heat damage but no one will own up.

Nice looking wood , it looks a bit like moisture/ water damage... what finish does it have ?

When was it done, I've seen damage from hot mugs like that, that were awful rings in the varnish & they disappeared gradually.

Nice solid good looking wood, I think that I would sand the whole surface and refinish with something more resistant, I have used a product that you rub on with a cloth. Called Patina, Screwfix used to have it,

Don't use a belt sander, will it rub out with fine wire wool

Hi. Use Brasso, It's a fine abrasive. I've used it in the past and had good results.

Looks like heat / water damage, traditionally with french polish you would set fire to it, I am not kidding!
Modern varnish I would try rubbing it with a soft rag so it gets warm and see if it changes as the heat may force the moisture through the surface.
If not it might need refinishing, try the wire wool as above first

Put a cotton cloth over the marks and apply a hot iron to the area for several seconds and check the result. Keep doing that until the marks fade, but be careful not to overheat or scorch anything.

I think it's Acacia wood.
Originally it had a satin finish as if it had been lightly waxed or oiled.
There is ni varnish or french polish on it.
It looks like it has had a hot drink spilt on it and a square container with something wet/warm in it.
It happened ages ago and was put in the attic.
It's back in service now and no one can remember what happened to it.

Tried something that I remembered doing years ago.
Rubbed a walnut on it.
Made the white marks disappear straight away but I could still see the edges of some stains so used some 240 wet and dry ,that chased the ring marks out then went over again with a handful of walnuts.
It's a lot better than it was.
Probably got a bit carried away with the wet and dry and will see in better light if I have to blend it in a bit but I'm quite happy really.

We used walnuts when I was an apprentice TV engineer in the days when the backs lit up brighter than the screen, took out light scratches on polished cabinets, remove the brown inner husk before rubbing on polished surface or it can scratch, (that takes me back a very long time)

Tried brazil nut as well which worked the same, but the walnut gave the oil up easier
