What's it like owning a XJS?

The V6 twin turbo diesel out of an S Type would be my choice of engine transplant for an XJS - I prefer economy over performance :whistle:

The 300tdi is good enough on fuel for me

Ahhhh. 300Tdi in an XJS then

Somebody I know had a SI XJ6 with an ancient Perkins engine. You could hear it from miles away and it only did around 50 mph flat out !

I had an XJ6 and an S-type, have an XJR now

what year are you looking at ?

I had an earlier one, R reg iirc - it was the V8 not the straight 6, bought it as a scrapper barn find to take the engine out and put it in my camper van (but never got around to it)

it was a really nice car, but totally totally rotten

after 2004 they're aluminium, but there's a big price jump

pre and post 04 power specs are about the same, but the newer gearboxes are better, and they have a few bits like air suspension and fancy shock absorbers with electromagnets in them to firm the ride up when you're pushing it a bit etc.

haven't driven the straight 6 XJR, but they're supposed to be really good, my non super charged one was, I really liked that one :-)

Well my xjr has just passed its MOT

just waiting for it to be deliverd on tuesday, cant wait

My wife's stepfather had 4 XJ's & had them converted to LPG. He was always trying to persuade me to buy one, but they are a bit big to turn round in our drive.

The old Jag V12's with mechanical injection, ( practically leccy-free like a basic diesel) were probably even more thirsty, BUT they were our motors of choice for glider autotow cars: heavy, poky and not a lot to go wrong... when it matters..

in my opinion, the more Joe Lucas got involved, the more risk of it going wrong and possibly causing a crash..

XJS's are going to get rare in 5,4,3,2.. I'm sure there is a top owners' club but..

i gave up after a while :laughing:

only minor really, i can deal with them

i didnt pay all that much for it really, compared to some of prices on eBay at the moment for supercharged ones.

Hope exhaust really is just a small blow that is fixable as a new system could cost a small fortune

they dont seem to be that expensive to me :dontknow:

but it wasnt rotten so should be an easy fix.

im quite suprised how reasonable parts prices are for it.

When I had my S2 3.4 XJ6 a mate had a 2.8GL Granada at the same time. A lot of the time the parts for the Jag were actually cheaper than the Ford !
