Strange Computer Happening

Windows 7 Home Premium

Started up as usual, enter password, get message "Initialising Desktop" (or similar) after a while my desktop appears, icons re-arranged and no wallpaper.

All program settings have gone, taskbar pins changed, open Opera no bookmarks, open Opera Mail, no email accounts and so it goes on.

Instead Internet Explorer opened with a message about Trusteer EULA being updated. Trusteer is a security program from IBM which my bank insists I should have installed.

Looked in c:\users and as well as "Public" and "Me" there was a "TEMP" user without very much in it, so I'm guessing it started up as a user "TEMP"

I did a re-boot and then all was well.

Any ideas?

ive never come across that however i have come across where pc hung while booting and that sounds like it had done

did you sign the eula reference ? as that maybe the program that hung the pc until you agreed to except it

If you check Event Viewer you'll see "Could not sign you in so you have been given a temporary profile" events.

Something went poo poo with the sign in so you got a temporary profile. This doesn't have any of your settings or logins so you get what you saw.

It happens now and again and generally it's nothing to be concerned about. If it starts to happen a lot or every time then look at a) your connectivity - no internet can cause this as it phones home and b) your primary drive for potential issues. Not necessarily them but a reasonable place to start.

I reckon if you reboot it all will be well.

Firm believer in the IT crowd remedy here, have you tried turning it off and on again

My Dad's laptop was completely unusable kept giving new profile and then crashing, couldn't sign in to websites etc. I assumed he had a nasty viral infection acquired from one of the murkier parts of tinterweb. Multiple AV scans, malware checks you name it, all came up clear. turns out it was trusteer rapport as requested by his bank that was causing all the problems. Uninstalled it and everything went back to normal. If things continue misbehaving try removing it. Online banking still works without it, you just need to be careful, which you should be anyway. I don't trust trusteer and always click no when they ask me to install it.

Was a couple of years ago but I still view trusteer with a great deal of suspicion. Fortunately my Dad mainly uses his ipad now, and hopefully stays away from murky bits!
