My old pc had two spare drives in, they mirrored each other so whatever I put on one automatically also went on the other, I have removed the second drive from the old system and the jumper is set as 2cs, looks like I had better get to the drive I have transferred to the new pc and check the jumper.

A caddy was in my thoughts as well, luckily I have two back up drives with all the photos etc so am fairly safe but would still prefer not to lose one.

Well that did that!

I thought I still have a spare back up hard drive if all goes wrong so I hit the import button....and

I now have my back up disc visible and all is still there, plus of course another identical back up disc which I shall seal and store away in the safe.

I did wonder if they were part of a mirrored pair with it coming up as foreign. Windows is normally very good when it comes to casually adding disks.

So you had a raid system ? if so the drive wont read as its not in the raid array

Is that what the system was called

I had the normal C operating drive and a back up drive (M) that was mirrored by another drive (invisible) of the same make and size, drop something on M and it also went to the hidden drive....belt and braces

I am probably explaining what is pretty obvious to anyone with skills.

M has been put into the new pc, initially recognised as a foreign disc and not able to access, after importing through disc manager and now working fine, so still have the spare invisible drive from the old pc also with everthing still on.

I will get round to installing the last drive and having the same back up system as before.

I am ok ish on pc technology but a long way off competent, if a hammer does not fix it then it's time for asking advice.... and this is as good as spot as any, as was proven once again.

I built a couple of raid (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID) systems and my understanding of it is you have 2 hard discs and your right they mirror each other so if one disc goes duff you can just replace it and rebuild the data from the good disc which I have done but I have never put a raid disc from one tower into another pc tower.
Now if your new tower mobo supports raid you might be able to re build the array using the disc from you old tower but its something I have never done so cant say if it would work.
