New battery with no acid/water.

We took delivery of 3 new lawn mowers in work last week but when I unpacked them from their crates and put all the bits and pieces together I found the batteries to be flat. We have no charger in work so I told the foreman and he was pretty miffed off as they were over £8000 each. So the suppliers dropped off 3 new batteries today and I fitted them and all was well.
Boss says I can take the flat ones for scrap if I want.
Then someone said normally motorbike batteries come dry with a bottle of acid to add, so I checked the batteries and they are dry but there was no acid supplied with the mowers.
Anyway my question is can I just buy battery acid and fill them up or is there more to it?

Just add the acid and away you go. That's how my bike batteries arrive. Apparently it's due to courier reasons.

It’s normal for them to come dry. There’s usally cartons of acid that turn up in the box with the battery. They cartons literally just bop on top the battery acid glugs in then chuck the cartons and pop the plugs in

I had assumed a certain amount of common sense on here. Not elsewhere though.

Dry charged batterys will have the acid in a little bottle (usually 6 chambers) to just put on top of the cell's and tap down to fill,

Will produce charge when acid is added and should be left alone for 24hr''s prior to being used after adding.

Motorcycle battery''s usually come with a white box inside the big box and contain the acid.

Finding the acid is my problem. I can get motorcycle mart to fill them but wont sell it so i can fill them myself.

Any decent motor factor should be able to fine some.

A mower in that price bracket would normally be assembled and pre delivery inspected by the supplying dealer. Are you sure that they were not gel batteries?

They are special mowers for cutting scrub and heavy grass on very steep slopes. They have permenant 4 wheel drive and a diff lock. The cutting deck is more like a topper that you see behind a tractor.
Will call into motor factors hopefully before the weekend and ask if they have any acid.

Just had a look through the I structuon leaflet that was stuck to the side and it explains how to put the acid in but there was definitely no acid anywhere in the crate or mower.

Dry charged batteries were always the norm. Yes, they do have a longer shelf life.

Don't put acid in until you want to use them. If the batteries don't have see through sides, the acid should have come in six separate bottles moulded together, so each cell gets the right amount. Just how you judge how much to put in without the bottles is a problem. Do not fill right to the top, about 1/2" air space above the acid is normal, but the metal plates should be covered.

You won't be able to buy the acid as an individual, a genuine company should be OK

There is a max and min mark on the side so should be OK if I can get some acid.
