Asbestos warning sticker on my 1988 car

Just rolled this little jeep into the garage to start working on. It's in general good nick but been sitting in a barn for ten years and is a non runner. I think I've found the fault now, a dodgy 12v feed to the coil, hopefully I'll have it running soon.



Anyway, there is a "Warning asbestos" sticker under the bonnet, but where in heck could there be asbestos on a 1998 car?

Depends where the car was made or when it was imported over.

Chances are that it probably won’t have any now but it was originally to be found in the brake linings

Did a UKATA asbestos course a few weeks back. A bit basic but asbestos was used up until 1999.

Could be brake or clutch linings. Exhaust gasket, head gasket and other engine gaskets are the most probable.

The full ban on asbestos was delayed due to the use of it in brake linings so that's probably where you'll find it.

It defo ain't a Jeep, think I need to add this to the recent thread about annoyances.

Mate used to work for Bearmach in Caerphilly, he was fed up to the back teeth of people ringing up and saying, "alright butt, I'm after some parts for my Jeep" to which would politely reply "I'm very sorry sir but we only sell Land Rover parts"

It's an SJ413. 30'000 miles and virtually rust free barn find. I always wanted one but never wanted to deal with how rusty they all are so I was really lucky to find this one.

It needs a bit of a tidy, the seats have blown, some of the dash is missing, the springs are sagging. And it looks like someone forced the tail gate beyond it's limits and slightly bent the bodywork. One door is misaligning with the body, but the body disasembles into bolt apart sections, so has some adjustment in it. And new spares still available from India if need be because they still produce it there.

Well it's got a drop down windscreen, soft top and simple jeep type bodywork, and I think SJ stands for Suzuki Jeep

If it's just asbestos in the brakes and gaskets and clutch then that is workable, I'll just be careful. There's no sound deadening and doesn't look like there ever was.

Plus wiring insulations, sound absorbing material. It may have a trace, or a hint is made in a factory what they decided was not asbestos material free.

.It was still in the council style black toilet cisterns up to 1990. Low level but a hint was there.

Friend of mine had the SJ410 van version. The original carb was worn out so fitted 11/2" SU to get it to tick over. It did about 45 mph flat out, shook your fillings out and only did about 20 mpg. He didn't keep it long but he doubled his money on it.

The stuff pops up here like no tomorrow. Firstly that God awful piece of crap car the Chery (banned in Australia due to asbestos) is allowed to freely roam the streets, then NZ becomes the only Western nation to buy Chinese trains, the Dailan DL class, which were specified to use no asbestos, so what magical element might they contain upon arrival to NZ? Jokers the lot of them...

In the same rail order there was another scandal of sorts, that the wagons were being made in China as a cost-saving measure when we have our own railway workshops here. The bogie sets were defective and had to be rebuilt here - buy cheap, buy twice. I think there was a whole batch of Chinese railway track they bought and found it was unfit for use. NZ never learns.

Yup sounds right. As a daily car they have a bad rep. Main complaints are underpowered and archaic suspension. Engine is easily sorted as there's a 1.6 from same family that is almost bolt in.
