I think they have misunderstood the market here. Do people want self drive cars? I want to drive a car, not be a bit of cargo in it I for one don't want this technology.

I'm bad enough as a passenger in a car. Even worse as pillion on a motorbike. Wouldn't catch me being driven by a computer.

Knowing my luck halfway down the M1 it would reboot for important updates...

Big business wants it because it will make them lots of money.

Governments want it because they are feeble minded and easily led by big business by the promise of more jobs and better safety bs, only 13% of our politicians have any engineering or science background.

Maybe youngsters will want it, that way they can fiddle with their phones while being taken to work?

I don't like the cars that can drive them self one day they will just take over and kill everyone not just the cars but the robots there making that can walk and talk

And are they going to make the car and who programmed it to take a driving lesson and what about life or death decision the car will be programmed to do the least amount of damage in a worst case scenario say a bunch of people walk in to the road the car will just turn and plow yo in to a wall or something and kill you to save the other person so there won't be any self presivation

I don't think people are aware of the huge changes we are facing with self driving vehicles. Possibly as huge as when the car was first introduced.
They may not be as safe as a good driver - but I am sure they are safer than an 80 year old!
It won't be long before you can just call up a Johnny Cab on Uber.
Think of the job losses - no more taxi drivers - no more bus drivers - no more long distance lorry drivers.
The technology is coming no matter how much we complain.

As regards that accident - the woman should have seen the car - they are easier to spot than pedestrians.
BUT - the car should have seen the woman coming no matter what the lighting - they have a wide array of sensors - not just visible light.

It was a shock seeing it. I’ve been staying across the road from where it happened for the past few weeks. Was here last year too. Was seeing those XC90s every morning at the lights - usually 4 or 5 of them out on their tests.

Possibly not ... There will be thousands less cars driving to the factory each day , those people & the heavy use of materials & fuels have been replaced by robotic assemblers & plastics ..

Most of the work force lived close by in those days, they would have walked or cycled to work.

in the early 1980's near Vauxhall at Luton when I was doing & tonne of precision casting deliveries two or three times a week , there were massive employee car parks . it used to take an hour or more to get into or out the town at shift change time . I think there was nearly 3000 employees at the time , before the recession really chewed it out now it's about 600 .


I liked the appraisal of the advent of the AC ( Autonomous Car ) by Fizzy of where we will end up .
It's no use being a Luddite and start smashing up the machinery either AC's are a coming like them or hate them . We still have stones having left the stone age but we do have a few stonemasons AC take up will be similar . I feel it will get to the stage say within 20 years where insurance companies , having crunched the data wrt claims will conclude AC's are by far the safest risk to their shareholders i.e your pension & mortgage funds & refuse to insure any human driven car ( HDC)

There have been billions of miles of computer simulated driving done to get the algorithmic codes to where they are right now . Globally companies doing the real time testing are currently clicking up about 3 million miles per month according to a report dated 18 March 2018 that I read last night & it's increasing exponentially .

Think on this ...... I think I'm right in saying most modern airliners can & frequently do actually take off , fly auto pilot & land solely using computers for the task .
It won't be very long either before they are auto taxing along buried cables to bring them precisely to the docking points or take them to the runway .
Our AC's will develop even faster in a similar fashion .

Somewhat similar to the Ev argument

Many people don't want a self driving car or an EV because they could not give up the excitement of driving a V8 supercar along an mountain pass with the wind in their hair and a beautiful blond in the passenger seat while you look at the beautiful sunrise without a cloud in the sky

Which is something that sounds too good to be true

Speaking for myself that happens almost exactly never in my day to day driving.

90% of my driving is on a tedious dual carriageway surrounded by half asleep sheep staring at the phone while shuffling along in a white diesel audi that sounds like a badly built russian tractor in the rain


I will happily swap that for jumping into a self driving electric car if it has a nice cupholder for my morning coffee

Will a self driving car be programmed to kill the pedestrian or the passengers in the car

It will have to be able to recognise the pedestrian and quickly work out if they are old or young and if their place in society is more worthwhile then passengers

If the car swerves will it be a fatal accident

What are the chances of the pedestrian surviving etc and so on

All calculated in milliseconds

I think it is far to much for any computer todo


So maybe we should make them react more like a human would react

Slam on the brakes, close their eyes and swear profusely while ploughing on in a completely random direction.

Tesla already have their autopilot which is not a very clever self driving feature post a better accident rate than humans


So if you think we should not have self driving cars because of the trolley problem then you have failed the test yourself as you have chosen a path where more people will die

What we don't really know first hand is did the AC actually record her as standing at right angles to the road about to cross or was she walking along the foot way & suddenly placed herself a second or so before the collision in to the path of the vehicle.......not having looked to see if it was safe to cross .

If it is as I've said I can see why the police chief says AC nor the driver carries any blame .

Suspect neither scenario will be the reality , the car will stop in as short & safest distance as possible . Remember there will be other Ac's present in the long term so electronic warnings will be picked up as to their presence way ahead of collision distances .

For the manual driving versus the AC I doubt that the scenario will ever happen for the car will be automatically slowing down by computer & coming to a stop if objects get too close .
I wouldn't like to drive an AC ina city in India ,Pakistan or China thought ... you'd never manage to get moving as they are so populous .

Basically it comes down to what do you trust more to drive a car around

A human or a computer

I've driven the A90 in fog, rain and snow

Given the choice between what would you trust more between

Your average human driver or this

Lets just say i'm not choosing the one with opposable thumbs

When you look at aircraft crashes human error is by far the biggest cause.
In conditions of bad visibility sensors will give you that edge.
