I thought that the video release by the police had been doctored or was from a really poor quality camera not showing the light correctly, seems I was correct

Conspiracy theorists have little fear out of the millions of miles that autonomous vehicle have covered , so far I think there are only two know deaths resulting from them being on the road . Compare that with the daily death toll from cars with " expert " human drivers at the controls .
You never know you might be able to get a higher compensation for your family if an autonomous vehicle snuffs you out as it is so rare an event wrt miles covered per vehicle .

Well you would expect a robot to be able to see literally as clear as daylight. Not only that, it should be specifically looking out for any human shaped object in the road!

The spectrum of "light" for humans is a tiny fraction of the information easily available to cameras, all the way from infra red to ultra violet. Most cameras actually have to be filtered to avoid ultra violet and frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if some systems include RADAR (radio).

Bottom line is the person in the car was too busy looking at there phone (or book) rather than doing the job assigned.
If it wasn't an autonomous car they would be done for dangerous driving.

They should be prevented from being developed.......how many times do you see a blue screen of death.....its a killers paradise.

Your assumptions are wrong, in the US there are ~1.2 deaths per 100million miles driven on the roads, autonomous driver tests are at less than 10million miles.

The LIDAR/control system clearly failed and the youtube videos show that the road was actually well lit, unlike the poor quality Uber video.

Even with the original Uber video, I think I would have been able to swerve, in the 1.5 seconds the woman was visible…and clearly in the videos showing the area correctly you would have time to pull up and stop.

I don’t understand the Police Chiefs actions and statements that no one is to blame.

Human nature makes these trials inherently unsafe the test driver can’t be trusted to pay attention unless they are engaged, which this "test" driver was clearly not.

My issue being the population is increasing rapidly and jobs are being automated more and more. That's fine but with our current economic model it's unsustainable.
No work no income.

You know just as well a I its all about money in to money out they will do it the cheapest way possible that's why I do work for myself so does my grandad and brother we all do different things though they do pest control I do metal work

If they can't con us that driverless cars are better on safety grounds they'll move onto their usual plan b, they're better for the environment! Just like scrapping 8 year old cars that do 45mpg and buying a new one that does 48mpg is better for the environment, and will save you money too!

The Reliant Robin ( all I could afford to get me to work reasonably warm & dry ) that I had in 1981 was built circa 1960 & did around 65 mpg.
