Arc eye 'indirectly'?

Strange question to ask but here goes. I've never had arc eye directly from my own welding or from being in close proximity to somebody else. I've had slight irritation from being caught unawares from a distance. But how about this? Has anybody ever had arc eye (mildly) from watching somebody weld on a You Tube video? It seems that every time I do this (watch a welding demo' on You Tube) the next day I end up feeling like somebody has punched me in the eye and thrown a handful of sand into my eye just for good measure. This will last for a day or so and then eases off again.

im not sure a tv or monitor could output that kind of uv at those levels, just the colour that the arc looks like. I think you'll be fine! you could try watching the videos in full PPE though?

might be affected by flashing lights they normaly advertise it before showing programmes it wont be ark eye though

Oh yeah definitely mate. You've gotta put your welding mask on when watching any kind of arc, even on a monitor or TV.

On a serious note, no you can't get arc eye indirectly. You just got sore eyes from staring at a bright screen for too long. Arc eye is when the top layer of your eye gets burnt by uv light. Its pretty much sun burn on your eye ball and a tv or laptop can't put out the uv to cause that kind of damage

I did get a bit worried once when my son walked in the garage and was watching me stack some dimes don't tell the wife. Luckily nothing happened but i felt really bad as it could have.

Daytime running lights are bright enough to get the old arc aversion reflex going.

Reflex action always makes me shield my eyes when an arc is shown on the TV.

Oh yeah definitely mate. You've gotta put your welding mask on when watching any kind of arc, even on a monitor or TV.

4K makes it even worse, I always use shade 9.

if its a CRT monitor it could be mild X ray radiation due to the brightness of the arc. covering your head with earthed tinfoil should dissipate most of this

I would think that it would have to be a very powerful arc to injure from a distance as it what they call an inverse square law. Even moving a slight distance from the arc would make a huge reduction in the effective power.

You would need a strange and nasty monitor to burn your eyes.

I didn’t read the first post properly. How on earth could you get arc eye from a video monitor. A monitor doesn’t give off UV.
