Car trailer brakes

hi all,

Having to sort the car transporter out as it was borrowed and the handbrake left on.
It mullered the brakes and spat out all the grease from the bearings.
On inspection the drums and quite grooved.
To what point do they need replacing?
I have sourced shoes and bearingns but the drums are over a 100 a piece, an expensive excercise when there are 4!

I think there are too thin to spin up in the lathe

Any advice appreciated

There moral in that story.....

It really depends if there's any meat left for a skim in the drum, there's normally a maxium diameter measurement cast into the drum which it can be taken out. Even this will be on the safe side.

The drums may have a dimension cast on the drum to give you the size you can machine them out to.
£100 a shot for a drum is very steep. The trailer place I have used charge about £30 to 40 for a drum, sans bearings. Or about £80 for one with bearings, grease cap, nut and split pin.

Shop around, you will get a better deal.

I’ve looked everywhere.
They are alko 2051or 2050 4x100 taper roller bearing

It can get expensive, I have just done £800 on brake cables, shoes, bearings and a jockey wheel for my trailer. Since found out the company I purchased from is owned by a friend of the family and I could have got 20% off

problem I found was that my drums had 'bell mouthed' after someone abused them. so no amount of safe skimming was going to sort them out.

I actually found it cheaper to buy new axles than drums and shoes, axles are about £250 complete, so if drums are £200 its a no brainer.

if any of you guys need 203x40mm avonride shoes/fitting/cables/drums then hit me up as I have a load new stuff sitting here that I will never use.

Would it not be a lot more sensible to chop off the alko stub axles & weld on a set of car hubs & drums, cavalier ones used to be the commonly used one. Then you can use cheaper parts commonly available from a motor factor rather than be restricted to the trailer specific ones!

You have to replace the bearings & drums anyway, the only extra part is the stub axle. You will probably get 4 complete hubs from a car breaker for less than £100. You might also need 4 suitable rims unless you source the hubs from a car with the same pcd as your trailer. You will have to adapt the handbrake linkage to suit your trailer, try to get a section of the cable along with the car hubs.

I have tracked down drums for £60 each, come with new bearings too. Ordered. Set of stainless cables too.

As for using car stuff by the time I’ve sourced all the bits I’m no better off why mess with something that works too.

I have an ifor stock trailer, back plates were rotted through where the brakes had been siezed and it had been driven. i bought it cheap. Yes trailer parts are blinking expensive. Drums etc. Older ones 80 notes each. Complete axles are 425 plus vat each.

In the end drums got a skim, new back plate mountings were made and welded on for more modern complete back plates these came complete for the price of the origional shoes. Cables etc. All sorted new bearings, again did about 800 quid. If Id been paying a trailer places, the mind would boggle at the price. Would probably have been cheaper to buy a new trailer.

Like evetthing else trailers need tlc in some respects more than cars as they tend to stand in a corner unused for long perieods.

How will you make them auto reverse?

The hand brake linkage will not work to the force required.

Changing the braking system could be a material change & hence need an IVA.
