I am not sure you will be able to do that. The data shown are those in the current configuration, no doubt they will be stored somewhere but I don't know how to get to them.

Yes, if the drive it is in the laptop it can not get the current data from your old system so will not display the desktop's processor.
Give it a go by all means but I think you are barking up the wrong tree.

Me, this morning.... However, in trying to get to the spec of the machine, I discovered it's 9 years old so in pc terms hasn't done too badly, I suppose.

I've ordered a socket 775 off the 'Bay for not a lot, which might help identify the source of the problem. If it turns out to be the m/board or any part thereof, I'll be shopping for a replacement box.

Replacement CPU is coming snail mail but I'll report further when it arrives and I plug it in.

Considering we write PC's off over 3 to 4 years where I work. You're doing very well with it.

Something like this would do you a treat i'm sure. in fact this one has a very good processor in it!
They can be a bit tight for fitting a decent graphics card, but depends what you want to use it for. they normally have basic on-board graphics anyway.
One i have has a 2.66 dual core, 9600GT 512mb graphics, 4gb ram, and my old audigy 2 sound card in running windows 10. will run my rc racing game quite well.

have you tryed mem test over night ? worth looking at to cheak your ram they can over heat as well

when playing cheaking pcs for meny reasons i used to do a set of things in order bear in mind i had spares of all parts bit differant if i had to buy stuff to start swaping

0. windows system/harddrive
1 mem test
2 power supply
3 motherboard/graphics card
4 cpu

cpus rare to fail in my limeted experance normaly its the socket on the motherboard thats at fault or as already said heat paste another then to look at is any thing blocking the fins under the fan on the cpu heatsink seen meny over the years with a layer of fluff under the fan but on top of the heatsink a quick flick with a small paint brush and hover does wonders for the life of a mechine

more just info for any one using pc/laptop use a hover every 2 months over the vents / cases keeps the pc heathy

Yes they do but they are stubborn beggars and don't do it all in one go. If you run a CPU too hot (say your PC cooling is compromised) it degrades the CPU over time. Think of it as the PC version of Parkinsons.

And you can also burn them up by overcooling
Well not strictly true but I used to cool my CPUs to minus 20 and then overclock them, had a couple that were great clockers but they burnt up outside of the core.

Bringing this back to life again, the machine I bought was DOA [or as good as]. Picked up by Courier on Wed for its trip back to Seller and a full refund was issued to me yesterday, so I'm back in the hunt again.

One question, would there be any advantage in buying a Workstation as opposed to an 'ordinary' desktop machine? Whichever it is, it'll be a refurbished one. You kids with "I must have the latest shiny kit mentality".... I'm typing this on a 12 year old laptop which is perfectly fine even now, it's not slow by any means, 2.5ghz duel core with 8GB memory. Granted it's a Lenovo Thinkpad which whilst not quite upto the old IBM standard build quality is still a decent piece of kit.

Heck I still use a computer from the mid 90's from time to time (by choice) and I also drag out my old 8bit machine from the 80's for a gaming session from time to time.

I feel much better after reading that bit , take a couple of these . It's been a long time since I was young enough to qualify for the description 'kid'.

I do have a couple of older laptops which which get used occasionally, one running XP because Epson, in their infinite wisdom, refused to produce drivers for my Epson scanner compatible with either Win 7 or 10.

My 'dead' desktop was running 2GB RAM, so I'm sure anything will seem faster by comparison.
