Who's texting me?

I get loads of texts like this:

Obviously don't click the link but can I block it? It doesn't appear as a number, just Mark C (Or David W, Mike C, Support, etc), usually where it says delete at the top right there's a little menu with the option to block them. I'd never bothered doing anything as I didn't expect them to send anything twice but this one has now.

How is it showing a name and not a number, surely they would have to be in your contacts

Its an app the scammer has, basically they enter your number and then put in the number or name they want to appear on your phone.

Just another trick to make robbing people easier .

It's fairly common, I get texts from the kid's school and from my bank all of which have the name on but none are in my contacts

I work a little with phone systems and part of those systems is that you can totally program the number you wish to present on outbound calls and texts.

I've seen phone calls come from completely fictitious STD area codes to make you think a call is legit and not from someone wishing to part you from your money.

Basically that. I have a corporate SMS sending account at work and when I send a text from it I can enter any number or name and that's the name that appears that the text is from when someone receives it.
