Recommend an estate car

never gave these any thought before, but after your post I had a quick look at these on the equivalent of auto trader here...wow, I'm still shocked at the average mileage of these over here, majority had well over 350000, but a lot had around 450000km on the adverts....one had 480000 !!, pretty unbelievable for modern engines, especially as most seemed to be petrol !!...

I'll maybe need to have a look at Volvo myself for the next one.

Just make sure you check what the turning circle is like. The OH's one had envy against Maersk oil tankers for how narrow a circle they could turn in. Never had such a terrible terrible lock on a vehicle. More than once I toyed the idea with putting red and green lights on the wing mirrors...

When I was looking for my dog van I tried one, it was pretty awful barge round the lanes. With a trailer it needed a man with a red flag to stop the traffic to turn it round.

That's one thing it was good at, the brake were excellent. The turning circle though, I've never known something so poor. Motorway and B road stuff it was great but pootling into town and getting parked was a pain.

Never gave it a thought before but my 320d dog van has a very good lock, yet another reason to keep..... and keep spending on it :-)

The Subaru Forester is a thirsty beast but incredibly reliable - we are on our third and fourth, the last one we had was virtually run until the parts for it became more expensive than the vehicle sold as a whole. We're slowly working up the years, think we've got a 2004 and a 2007 at the moment, the old one was a 2003 and the one before that a 2001 (I think). They're comfy enough but also rugged too, and 4wd is great as is having the towbar.

Morning all,
Having ruled out a discovery etc on the fact i do alot of miles,i would like a new (to me) estate car,budget is £5500 max ,its to replace a passat b5.5 1.9tdi lovely car (my second) but getting to the point of do i spend a great deal of money on it to futureproof as it were or replace it as i have the money,i cover 1200-1500 miles a month regularly,so more than likely another diesel.

Kia's and Hyundais are decent, how well are they rust proofed would be my only concern. Rented a Hyundai Tucson last week and it was night to drive.

I'm a sales rep so do megga miles and got myself a Hyundai i40 a year ago. Great spec, decent drive, 50mpg, decent to tow with and its massive. We'll worth a look.

Technically an oil tanker can turn in its own length especially if it is one with a bow thruster

Only a low speed however

Once they are moving it becomes less impressive
