Timber depth vs span for boarding out loft?

Go for the 4x2 graded.
The major weight factor is going to be the chipboard. I doubt the difference in weight of the joists is going to be significant.


Unistrut doesn't compare pricewise - it's £4 ametre, whereas 4x2 is only £2 a metre

Sorry, i didnt reply about the unistrut -

Basically i can almost see a wood yard from my front door. I can go there, and carry it home without even using an engine. If im a bit short, i can just walk over there again and pick it up.

If i get involved with mail order and all that, its going to just take so much longer.

4x2 then - on 16" centres if neccessary.
Have you considered getting 18mm ply, and gumtree'ing the chipboard to recover the cost?

sorry, you say to go for the lightest, and then say the weight wont be an issue - did you not mean go for the thickest as weight wouldnt be an issue?

Just seems odd to say go for the lightest because it does not matter how much it weighs? : )

4x2 cos it's *cheapest*

Lightness was one of my "pros" for unistrut.

i think wicks will take stuff back for a credit note, basically, forever

but its an hour and a half round trip, then another 30 mins there and back to take my friends trailer back to them

theres only so much mucking around that i can handle - if i was 100% certain, i could probably get the job done this evening!

Just go for it, then:
4x2 graded on 16" centres, then your 22mm chipboard on top.
Should support anything you'd want to carry up there.

its 150x47 equals 5 3/4" at most wood yards

would be the next best size im not advising under as it really should be for a 2 meter gap

but your more than welcome to wait for other comments dont just go by my own statement
