Grinder on its way out.

After a bit of use with a wire wheel my grinder is making a weird noise every now and then but especially when you switch off and its winding down.

Also went through a cutting disk removing two hinges. Should there be play in the spindle ?

Is it safe to use?

Back lash maybe but not spindle play.

Yep always use the guard. Not too concerned about the flap disk but i have a lot of wire wheeling to do.

i got 3 grinders here just cheaked them no play if it got a wobble bearing

Could it not be a bearing related issue?

Sometimes wheel bearings make noises even when there is no actual play in them

They are usually small 6200 bearings holding the spindle on.
Very easily replaced.
Worm bearings will start to wear the pinion gears which means new grinder.

If it' worth the £1.99 and 20 minutes, stick a new bearing in it.

i've allways found wire wheels and flap disks kill cheeper grinders , flap disks eat motors wire wheels knock the bearings out, allways seemes to be they used a bush on the shaft behind the crown wheel and its that that goes

A little play is normal, if it been used for a while. If it's rattling around, could be bearings, but the first thing to do would be strip the gear box cover off. Clean an repack the grease. Prolonged use causes the grease to heat up, and get flung away from the gears. Then metal to metal contact, I'd say that would be the most likely cause of the noise. No big drama, takes minutes to do, the first time I did mine I couldn't believe how little grease they put in. I use lithium based grease, about two thirds full (no more to allow for expansion). Build it back, and see if the noise is still there.

never liked that type of wire wheel, always go for the cup type....constant contact with the bristtles insted of hit and miss.......anything real bad / big I fire up the sandblaster..........easy for me, have a walk in cabinet and a road compressor....

Different brushes for different jobs. Twist wheels are good for getting rid of weld slag.

Whole heartedly agree, I have an ancient B&D grinder which developed similar problem. After dismantling, took one of the 2 identical bearings down to my local bearing supplier. Replacements quickly identified, less than a £5 later & the grinder back as good as new. That was over 3 years ago, still going strong.

Took a bit longer than 20 mins had to drill out one of the screws holding the gearbox on.

The bearing is 6000Z will see if i can pick one up today.

Treated my self to a small 115mm grinder 750W. Seems ok for €29.95. And i have two years to break it.

3m Cord, two quick release guards. Paddle switch (my old one was a flip switch no where near where my thumb was).

under, say £40, throw it away and get a new one bearings for them are £5.50 + the VAT from City bearing, Sheffield. That's ok but when you add your time into it, It comes to about £30. So then it's uneconomical

Changed the bearing €9 and added some fresh grease the gears were dry. It still has a tiny bit of play but much better and no noise. The circlip did not have much spring hopefully it will hold. Just need one more grinder now .

They are 1.74 posted in UK ( from sheffield) on eBay.
Iirc they are genuine skf too as its stamped on the race cover.
