IET 17th Edition regulations book. Do I need one?

I would like to ensure that any work I do will be up to the latest spec, even though it's just my proposed new house. There are many alternative offerings purporting to be what is required, but I don't want to waste my hard earned. Should I go for the real McCoy at £34 or a "guide to" at half the price?

Just go to your local electrical wholesalers and buy the A5 pocket/tool bag version.

I've got one of the earlier ones and I found it quite surprising, I did A level maths and there are some equations in there that I'm sure half the sparkies I know wouldn't have the faintest idea where to start with them.

Proposed renovations to an old but new to me property. Sorry for being vague! I just want to make sure that anything I do is done to the highest standards, like I did to my French property. I have no intention of involving Building control or any other bureaucrats.

Yes and still it goes on! It turns out that our buyers didn't have the money when they made the offer and still haven't. There have been a catalogue of delaying tactics and now their solicitor is once again unavailable, this time until 15th. The buyers are now waiting for an ex husband's mortgage to be agreed before funds can be released. I am getting so sick of it all now and it could still go mammaries skyward!

If you're not interested in getting it signed off then why bother with adhering to latest regs?

Because I am perhaps naively assuming that it IS going to ensure a high standard of safety and quality. This is why I want to have a look at the regs for guidance.

Without being signed off your insurance company will look at it as non compliant in the event of a claim anyway.

How will they be aware of any works unless someone informs them? I am definitely not going to be paying someone who will probably do a lower quality job than I am able to do, just to satisfy bureaucrats.

Not saying this to slight you or be argumentative - but how do you know your work (that you want to be guided on) will be of higher quality than someone who deals with it every working day and has been for years?

Because I have decades of relevant experience, having done many similar jobs without nannie's help and I will be under no pressure. (etc). As most of it will be hidden anyway, it should not even be a concern to anyone in the event of a claim.

Don't bother with the 17th edition, if you want the full monty get the 18th when it comes out in the summer, good luck deciphering some of it though......
Fit a 3rd amendment (metal) dist board , use a known brand name for the cable,( there is some very dodgy stuff out there at the moment!)
Sockets at 300 ish mm from the floor, light switches at nipple height, proper fire rated down lighters if you want them.
Bond the gas and water pipes using 10mm cable right up as close as you can get, and don't forget a nice big supply for the workshop!
