It is (or at least was) subsidised by the Chinese government - but not to the levels I've seen postulated...

From what I've seen, their postage is cheap to us, but not necessarily to them.

As a percentage of income, it would appear that to send a letter it costs your average Chinese person roughly about the same as 'us'. It's our income being so much higher that makes their postage look so cheap.

I sort of see that BUT....the same packet is travelling . It matters not which way it travels at some stage it hits the Royal Mail.

It has to be a case of who is responsible for mail in the other country.
Its all a bit weird as its privatised.
For example a Parcel sent via DPD gets moved by DPD or a subcontractor where ever it is.....china post reaches here and who moves it....Royal Mail......but why...who pays them?

What always amazes me ,is you can buy whatever you like from China,and you never pay customs duty. Buy anything else from anywhere else in the world,excluding the EU, and you get knobbled everytime...How does that work?

theyre prepared to write anything on the value label...if its a few pence /sample then no taxes

I was told it's simply an agreement between country's, in return for China post delivering RM sent stuff the RM delivers theirs.

I bet it's an agreement the RM is now not happy about considering how much is coming over.

A lot of the Chinese ebay companies are using fulfilment warehousing, or whatever it's called. They send their container to a UK warehouse who charges them for receiving it and storing the goods. When you order from the Chinese company on eBay the UK warehouse receives the instruction to ship the item. This way the items are indeed UK based but the seller is an offshore seller.

But as some of you have noticed, some of these sellers are just lying and shipping from China. If you challenge them they tell you they've run out of UK stock and had to ship from China.

So just what is the deal with postage in China?. I agree it seems as though the Chinese can ship things to the UK for next to nothing yet If I wanted to ship something to China it would cost me a small fortune.

I think it's a reciprocal agreement. Royal mail does not charge China mail for postal items received from China, in return for which, China does not charge Royal Mail for items we send to China. This way poorer countries are not penalised for sending to a dearer country.

Is that the new version of dropshipping?

I think drop shipping is different. Drop shipping is where the supplier sends the product direct so the reseller doesn't need to hold stock. Similar but different.

I just got stung for this, ordered a kitchen tap, I was sure it was Uk based, a week later I discovered it is from China and will be weeks away.

If it stated a short delivery time, start a dispute stating not received and you'll get a refund. If it turns up in the post you've got a spare
