Co2 for a Mig.

I have been restoring a 1971 Triumph Spitfire, During this restoration I have been using Pub gas Co2, I have found this a very cheap way of welding and all welds have been excellent. I know it is a bit late but is there a problem using Co2 without Argon?

When you say using CO2 with Argon do you mean mixing it yourself?
Certainly wouldn't advise that, but the commercially available Argon/CO2 mixtures (95% Argon, 3% CO2, 2% Oxygen) is the very best gas to be using & far outperforms CO2.

No I was and I am still using just Co2. No Argon just Co2.

I think you've pretty much answered your own question there, Bobyspit. If it worked for you, it's OK
Hwever, as Weldequip says, C02/Argon makes it easier to get good results

I'm uprgrading to a refillable from adams gas. I'm getting 'Krysal 5' gas mix

If I recall right its 93% 5% 2%

The guy said the 2% isn't really oxygen its just to cover for impurities etc, not sure about that.

Anyways, the disposables I used are 80% 20%

What difference do you think i'll see between the 2?

I'm going to mig weld 18ga. sheet metal in restoring my classic Mustang.
Would I be better off using the gas that you recommended ?

What's the differences with this gas as to the regular gas mix for mig?

You get a more stable arc with Argon/CO2 mix. Other than that for automotive bodyshell work in steel if you can get a ready supply of cheap CO2 then there is no reason not to use it.

hi bobbyspit just thaugt id post this link http://www.gascylinders.net/ its a cheap place for c02 gas cylinders without rental charges ok if you live nr st helens nr liverpool i spoke to them earlyer today and they said £17.50 would get me a Carbon Dioxide 14lb Cylinder full of gas New customers will have to pay a one of deposit of £10 per cylinder and then £7.50 per refil could be handy if any of u use co2 or live in this area
