Can you re-thread a chain block?

I'm looking at a chain block on one of those 'industrial chic' websites that relegates good stuff to a boring life out of action. It's missing its chain though, and I was wondering if it can be re-threaded?

You can re-chain it easily enough if you get the correct pitch chain but how do you now if the brake still works?

I've bough couple in the last year, I bought a 1t for £25 at the Newbury 4x4 sale fully complete and working. I then ended up buying a newer one which also included a chain driven runner to fit on a RSJ for £40. I had no desperate need but that's the time to buy stuff and I've always loved them. One of my lads couldn't believe that he was able to winch a dead Discovery 3 up onto the ramp with it on his own.

Yeah I've always wanted one and I like how easy they are to use. I've tethered them to trees before and even pulled a Jeep Cherokee with one - it's amazing how little effort is required!

Your better off getting a new one, You'll be amazed at how much force can be exerted with such little effort. Ive seen what happens when it all goes wrong

The time was that these were an expensive item & made good money second hand. I gave a guy £30 for a used 1 ton hublast a few years ago but when I went to use it a few months ago I discovered that it is badly worn but only shows up when the weight goes on it & everything jams!

I was looking on ebay & you can get a new hoist for less than £20!

One placed I worked at with lifting gear.

If it failed test certain things would happen to it.

Failed strops, cut in half.

Failed shackles and lifting eyes attacked with angle grinders.

Failed chain blacks, both chains removed.

That may of what happened to the OP block.

A mate of mine, now sadly departed used to work for a large engineering concern, lifting equipment was disposed of as soon as it failed test. He then did a stint as a manager in a company in Egypt that was owned by the same group. He then found out what happened to the failed lifting equipment, guess where it went!

I wasn't suggesting you 'smuggle' one out, I suppose that even if you'd asked if you could have one they'd have said "No", in case you tried to use it for its original purpose and it all went pear-shaped, injuring you or someone else. Sensible approach in these litigious times.
