Wireless CCTV

Our new house has a large garden area and yard with several big sheds (one of which is now stables, another is becoming my workshop). We are a bit out in the sticks and it would be nice to get CCTV coverage of most areas. Because it is quite expansive, I think a wired system could be quite difficult to setup. I dont know where to start, or the good names from the bad. Does anyone have any experience of wireless CCTV systems and be willing to impart some wisdom? We potentially need about six cameras to cover all of the areas that we would like to cover.

They need power, so you have to run that to them. So why not signal too?

The only good camera i have seen that was wireless cost so much it was cheaper to run a cable.

I thought that so bought a cabled system, I feel it was cheaper.
Give loads of thought to how many cameras to avoid blind spots, you need a big hard drive if going away as they soon fill up.
I bought a recorder that does 8 cameras but only 4 cameras as I may well add a couple more
Its good idea to plan positioning so a low down camera is catching faces as they approach for good images.
All too often people have the cameras in poor positions.
One top tip I was given is don't have the recorder in an obvious position as they just take it with them

Ideally we wanted to be able to access the images from the house or a central unit. As an example for why - my other half was there by herself last night. Car stopped outside quite late, she saw someone getting back into the car having come from our driveway. It would have been handy to see if they were just delivering a leaflet to the letter box or having a snoop around.

think about a low power flood light too

a 10 watt flood light makes a massive difference to cctv quality at night - I'm guessing if you're out in the sticks there's no street lights etc. ?

I have a few on at work 24/4 - 1 10 watt one is about 20p/week in electric

they don't need to fully light the place up, just some background light so you're not relying on nightvision
(they can boost up low light pretty well, but no light situations are pretty naff)

Use an HD digital modulator on the output from the DRV(s) and feed into the aerial distribution system. That way you can see them on any Freeview HD capable TV.

Wireless cameras have so many drawbacks and I would always advise against them. Wiring can be done either with CAT6 for the NVR types, or shotgun RG6b and power for conventional DVRs.

A fully wired installation would be best and give you the biggest choice of cameras but for a quick fix

If you have mains and all the connections are on the same fusebox/phase then IP over mains connectors might help assuming you are using IP cameras.

Yes. IP cameras use Internet Protocol over CAT6.

And if your using IP cams then dependent upon camera support you should be able to use PoE (power over ethernet).

Well just fitted the easy two, good quality and easy to set up plug and play really, I just need winch boy to help thread the rest of the cables and waiting for the cable to connect it to the inter web
I paid £219 2TB drive, 4 x 1080p cameras from Ebay with a 2 year warranty
Its so cheap now we should all get them

It's only because the garage is detached from the our house and would rather have the dvr somewhere harder to get to than in where they will probably break into.

As for running cables across would be easily snipable. So unsure what to do,
1 system on the house doing drive way and road, then another system doing garage? Just means I will have to hide/secure the dvr properly/tamperproof.
