What's wrong with using graphite powder? You can't really accuse that of becoming claggy or gumming anything up.

Nothing, running a pencil up and down the cable is almost the same, I've done it on many things and it works very well.

It actually says on the bottle "Ideal for chain, cables..." so I thought it would be good. If only they made hydraulic brakes to fit V brake posts.

So, you've got a welder, lathe etc and yet you aren't making the little modification yourself?
Tut tut.

I used to maintain a fleet of about 50 4-wheel rickshaws, which were leased out and sorely abused by the riders, often coming back to the yard having lost an argument with a bus, or sometimes even in pieces, having collapsed under the load of 250kg of Texan tourists..

( they were based on modified Brox recumbent chassis carrying 2 passengers. )

There was no chance of the boss paying for any special 'products'.

I used Castrol LM, or similar light, multi-purpose bearing grease on every single moving item.

Did the job.. one point is the chain and derailleur runs much quieter using grease.

Grease is your friend in grimy, London winter conditions.

The one in the photo is the lighter Brox model, for courier work, I maintained them sometimes, as a subcontractor for DHL.
They are superb vehicles and given a long, steep enough hill, will approach motorway speeds!
