Drummond Model B lead screw length

If someone has a Drummond B type could the please tell me the length of the lead screw?

Hi Carl from the point it enters the gearbox to nut on the rear handle is 780 mm this is maybe not the figure you were asking for but without taking the lead screw out its difficult to give the total. The threaded length is 470 mm to the back of the collar

First of all thank you all for the replies.

I'm not sure the B type lead screw is just the same as the M type. There are other subtle and some not so subtle differences so that could easily be one of them.

It was kind of a lazy question if I'm being completely honest. I needed to find out and I'm away from home so can't access my machine.

The reason I need to know is because I'm going to replace the lead screw. In my machine the nut is totally worn out so I'm going to make a new one. I'm going to skirt round the issue of trying to cut an internal LH square thread by making it 8tpi LH Acme.

I'm going to get a piece of 8 tpi LH acme threaded rod from Kingston Engineering in Hull. Then I'll turn that between centres to put the required features on it. The original leadscrew was corroded badly and after chemical rust removal was revealed to be badly pitted and in places the thread was hardly there.

I want to restore this lathe because it has an important place in the history of my family. In addition, the simple fact that it is part of British industrial heritage and has been around for 100 years means it deserves respect.

I'm not so much of a purist though to baulk at fitting an 8 tpi 5/8 acme leadscrew instead of the same but square thread.

Well the drawings only show the 1906 3 1/2 inch lathe lead screw. This is 23 1/16 inch long end to end. It's the one that ran along the lathe centre line under the bed. I don't think this is the same length as the B and certainly not the same features.

I'll just have to measure my old one when I get home. At least I have a rough idea what length acme rod I will need.

The drawings come from Tony Griffiths at lathes.co.uk.

They are good quality and produced by hand by one person, whose signature I can't read. They seem to have been done between about 1984 and 1992.

Most have been drawn from measurements of actual components. The serial number and type of machine is given in these cases. Others are taken from original Drummond drawings. Some have no source for the information given.

They make interesting reading and will be handy. That said they are far from complete. The B type is not well represented.

Along with the drawings there are a lot of period adverts and information from Drummond catalogues, mostly World War One era. There is also a very interesting section on models made using the lathes. There are excellent locomotives and a radial aero engine. All done on a relatively primitive treadle operated machine! And I whinge about not having a DRO...

A model B was about £14 in 1919. Lathe ownership and use must have been for the wealthy because I can only imagine that being a phenomenal amount of money in those days.

£14 is £1470 today.

Much as I love it, I'd not pay that for a machine like a Model B now.

Mind you, people pay more than that for a Myford, which is essentially based on the same foot operated machine designed in 1912.

Hopefully it won't cost me that much to restore it....watch this space.

It makes sense that lathe ownership spiked after both wars. Also after World War Two Hire Purchase became available. My brother has an old tool catalogue from the late 40s where HP is introduced as a new thing.
