Email spelling checker

I use Gmail as my mailing programme of choice and also prefer Firefox as my browser but can only enable spell checking as I type by using Ms Edge as my default browser. Have read and actioned all the instructions for enabling spell checking in Firefox but nothing I do gives spell checking on the go with it as the default.
Where am I going wrong?

Have you installed a dictionary?

Edit: If not try this one https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/british-english-dictionary-2/

Edit2: Once you have then right-click in a box you can type in (like the reply one shown) and tick the "Check Spelling" option. You only have to do this once and it's on for all sites.

Thunderbird it is tools, options, composition, then make a choice.

Just beware that the reasonably regular updates to Thunderbird will often break the spell checker, if it suddenly stops working after an update don't waste your time trying to fix it as its easier to just re install the spell check plugin and peace and harmony will return.

Similar story with Firefox here. The reason this is so fresh in my mind is because I just had to reinstall the dictionary after they went to the multi-process model after an update recently.
