VFD for a boxford 3 phase

Does anyone have any experience of these inverters or similar?

I'm very tempted to take a gamble on this for the money but don't know a lot about them.

It came from "Drives Direct" it was a great bit of kit with good back up from people that knew there stuff
Much better than a single phase motor

Yes I saw that but it does say it ships from Germany. I think that happens quite a bit, they store stock in Europe to deliver faster. I bought my plasma cutter the same way.

I was going to ring drives direct in the morning. I'd be happier with the better quality and backup but the price made me think should I have a gamble on it.

check out AVE on YouTube he has just done a few vids on the subject. be warned he is very sweary even for a Canadian. generally you get what you pay for it seams

I have a plug and play inverter drive system from Newton Tesla on my Boxford AUD mk1. Simply remove the original motor and fit the Newton Tesla one, plug control cable into controller and plug that into 3 pin 13amp socket and you're ready to go. Its a dear setup but no farting about wiring or programming parameters etc.

I also have the same vfd it works like a charm on my milling machine but a bit tricky wiring start stop buttons and trim pot

So the consensus seems to be that these drives are ok to good but a little tricky to set up. The tesla option is too much for me. I am going to order the above drive, at that price it has to be worth a go. I'll let you know how I get on.

I bought one for a mill from drives direct, not difficult to set up and the chap was very helpfull and available on the phone for advice, he stayed on the line whilst I wired it up and talked me through it all

Out of interest hat size motor is on the Boxford? Just presumed it would be smaller than 2.2KW that the VFD you were looking at.

I cannot see a rating on the motor plate so I know the person who owned it before me ran it off a 3hp inverter so thats what i went for. Hope it's not an issue as I have now ordered this one.

Just thought 3Hp seemed a lot for a Boxford but having a larger VFD than required shouldn't be a problem. My main reason for asking was I may have had a VFD at the workshop but think it would only be 2Hp anyway.

Got the VFD temporarily wired up for a test and I'm quite pleased with it. Forward/reverse and speed control all work. Takes a bit of setting up following the chinglish instructions but there are loads of videos on YouTube about it. Here is a really bad video of it in operation.

Should get the motor back in the lathe tomorrow and see how it performs.

When I took the plate off the back of the motor I was expecting to just have to change the 3 bars around to make it run on 240v 3 phase but there weren't any. Took it to a local motor rewinder and he sorted it for me.

Got a control switch and wired it into the vfd for start stop and speed control. Just got to make it all tidy and safe now.

Made a bracket to support the switch

and fitted the inverter into an existing opening

All works and looks reasonably neat. Will be interesting to see how long the inverter lasts.

looks good, have you wired the jog function in - really useful when using taps.
